Midwestern State Enters Drag's Court for Battle of the Mustangs

Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico women's basketball team will take Drag's Court for the final time this year this Saturday versus Midwestern State. The meeting of the Mustangs will be the 14th of the overall series, dating back to 1992.

WNMU was victorious on Valentines Day last season over MSU Texas, holding on for a 69-67 win on Drag's Court. The win would snap a five game losing streak against MSU, dating back to the first meeting since joining the LSC.
MUSTANGS TO WATCH:
Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) – 12.9 PPG | 50.8% FG | 74.3% FT | 9.1 RBG | 12 steals
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 8.4 PPG | 36.4% 3PT | 3.7 RBG | 12 steals | 2 blocks
Daria Vastrushkina – 8.0 PPG | 37% FG | 3.0 RBG
A LOOK BACK:
WNMU hosted their first conference match last Saturday against the Cameron Aggies. It was a tale of two halves, as the Mustangs struggled in the first half scoring just 17 points to the Aggies 39. CU cashed in eight three-pointers in that half on their way to the double-digit lead.

The third and fourth quarters were all WNMU, as they outscored their opponents 22-14, and 22-15 in an effort to close the gap. While the Mustangs kept the Aggies fairly quiet, the cushion created in the first half was too much to overcome as the Purple and Yellow fell 68-61.
SCOUTING MIDWESTERN STATE:
The Mustangs enter the weekend 2-3 overall, with wins over Dixie State and Texas Wesleyan early on in the season. In their conference opener, MSU fell 74-62 to UTPB on the road.

Senior forward Elizabeth Cathcart has seen time in all five games so far this season, shooting just shy of fifty percent from the field and 73.9 percent from the free throw line  to average a team high 14.8 points per game, which also ranks 7th in the LSC.  Cathcart also leads the defensive efforts with an average of 7.4 rebounds a game, 37 total. Her 11 assists, three blocks and two steals complete the senior's stat line.

Teammate Hannah Reynolds sits second on the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game, shooting 45 from the floor. Her 25 rebounds are second most on the team with 5.0 a game, along with an impressive seven blocks on the young season.

Picked to finish 8th in the LSC Preseason poll, as a team the Mustangs rank sixth in the LSC in scoring averaging 71.0 points a game, shooting well from all areas. However on the opposite side of the ball, MSU sits at the bottom of the conference in defense, allowing their opponents 73.4 points per game.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST on Drag's Court. Can't make the game? Follow along with live stats and live stream at wnmumustangs.com
