Volleyball Hosts St. Mary's and St. Edward's for Homecoming Weekend

Silver City, N.M. -- The Mustang volleyball team snapped a 7-game losing streak Monday, sweeping the Falcons in Odessa to avenge their loss nearly ten days prior.  They return home to continue conference play hosting St. Mary's Thursday, followed by St. Edward's Saturday.

A LOOK BACK:
  • Western was on a 7-game losing streak, dating back to Sept. 12 when they lost to Fort Lewis in a five-set heartbreaker.
  • The Falcons traveled to Silver City on Sept. 20, taking the conference opener in straight sets.
  • On the road for the second weekend, WNMU dropped their first two matches to Lubbock Christian and Angelo State.
  • Just ten days after their first meeting, Western made a statement defeating the Falcons on their home court in three sets for their first conference win.
  • Four players finished with double-doubles in the win over UTPB.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
St. Mary's Rattlers (7-5, 1-3 LSC)
  • The teams have only met once previously back in 2013, with the Mustangs taking the match 3-0 in San Antonio.
  • The Rattlers earned their first conference win over Eastern New Mexico last weekend in straight sets, but fell to West Texas A&M in a five-set thriller the following night.
  • Senior outside KK Payne leads St. Mary's with 119 kills on the season, averaging 2.70 per set.
  • Dishing it out is senior setter, Bree Perry. Perry has racked up 430 assists so far for an average of 9.56 assists/set, 3rd best in the LSC.
  • Defensively the Rattlers rely on Catherine Cruz in the backrow. The junior defensive specialist averages 3.79 digs a set, with a season high 30 against WT.

St. Edward's Hilltoppers (7-5, 2-2 LSC)
  • Historically, the meetings between St. Edward's and Western have gone the distance. Both matches have gone to five-sets with WNMU prevailing both times to hold a 2-0 series record.
  • Identical to St. Mary's, SEU lost in five to WT before rebounding with a three-set sweep of ENMU to go 1-1 in weekend two of LSC play.
  • The Hilltoppers look to junior outside Katarina Mendez on offense. She averages 3.02 kills/set with 133 on the season, and eight games with double-digit kills. Mendez ranks 11th in kills and 7th in hitting percentage in the LSC.
  • Sharing the setting duties are Emily Tran and Madison Heald. Tran holds a slight advantage with 5.91 assists/set while Heald contributes 4.89 assists, on top of a team leading 17 service aces.
  • As a team, SEU ranks 4th in hitting percentage (.240), 3rd in kills (13.60/set) and 3rd in digs (17.03)
First serve is set for 6 p.m. Friday against St. Mary's, and 1 p.m. against St. Edward's on Saturday for Homecoming. Live stats and video stream will be available through wnmumustangs.com and ProView Networks out of Albuquerque.
