Mustang Volleyball Rivalry Continues in Portales, Followed by a Clash of the Wests in Canyon

Silver City, N.M. – Mustang volleyball hits the road for their second to last road series of the season, traveling to cross state rival Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. WNMU will face off with the Greyhounds Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday match up with West Texas A&M. This will be the first of two meetings between the teams this season.
 
A LOOK BACK:
  • WNMU hosted Angelo State and Lubbock Christian last weekend on Drag's Court, dropping both matches to give the Belles and Lady Chaps the series this season, 2-0.
  • The Belles hit an efficient .359 on the match on 41 kills, while holding the Mustangs to just 27 kills on the night.
  • The Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian took home the sweep hitting .221, holding off the Mustangs to just a .051 hitting percentage.
  • Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) led WNMU with 17 kills and 14 digs on the weekend.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
EASTERN NEW MEXICO (3-15, 1-9 LSC)
  • This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.
  • The Mustangs sits one spot above the Greyhounds in the division rankings with a 1-5 record to their 0-6 record so far this season.
  • ENMU currently rides a three-game losing streak, hitting at a .171 clip on the season for an average of 10.19 kills a set.
  • Leading the way is junior outside hitter, Jasmine Gannon. The Clovis native has registered 151 kills so far this season on top of 155 digs to lead the Greyhounds, averaging around 2.50 a set in each category.
  • The duo of Rae and Qitana Sapiga share setting duties, averaging 4.91 and 3.75 assists a set, respectively.
  • In 2018, WNMU avenged their earlier season loss to ENMU with a five set win on Oct. 23 in Silver City.
  • A series that dates back to 1976, Eastern New Mexico holds a 30-14 edge, and a 17-4 record in Portales.
WEST TEXAS A&M LADY BUFFS (14-4. 7-3 LSC)
  • Under first year head coach, Kendra Potts, the Lady Buffs sit second in the division rankings behind Angelo State and are riding a two game winning streak after defeating Tarleton in Stephenville.
  • Hitting .254 on the season and averaging 13.7 kills a set, puts them third in the LSC in both categories so far this season.
  • They rank second in assists with 12.83 a set. On the opposite side of the ball the Lady Buffs average 17.0 digs, and 1.7 blocks a set.
  • True freshman outside, Torrey Miller has made a statement in a WT uniform, racking up 289 kills for a 4.31 average to lead the conference.
  • Miller also gets it done on defense with a 176 digs, second most on the team, and second on the team with 18 service aces.
  • Leading the team in digs is junior libero Chandler Vogel. Her 345 digs, 4.29 a set, is second most in the conference standings.
The Mustangs open the weekend Friday at 6 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico, followed by a 2 p.m. CST matchup Saturday against West Texas A&M.
