Silver City – Mustang Volleyball heads to Kingsville and Laredo, Texas to kickoff conference play for the 2018 season. First up is the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas, followed by a non-conference matchup against the Texas A&M International Dust Devils.
The Mustangs went 2-2 last weekend at the Dixie State Classic, with wins over Arkansas Ft. Smith and the University of Colorado –Colorado Springs.
True freshman
Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) currently leads the team with 113 kills, averaging 3.65 kills per set. Augustine also contributes defensively for the Mustangs, averaging 3.16 digs per set.
Sharing the offensive duties alongside Augustine are junior opposite,
Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) who fueled the Mustang win over UCCS this past weekend with 16 kills, hitting .343. Outside hitter,
Selai Damuni (Kula, HI/Tempview High School) played a major role in the win over the Lions of Arkansas Ft. Smith with 18 kills, and is closely behind Augustine averaging 3.30 kills per set.
Junior
Sophia Mitchell (Houston, TX/Katy Taylor High School) and Freshman
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) trade off setting duties, with Culp averaging 5.23 assists per set, with Mitchell following closely behind with 5.11.
Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) continues to dominate the back row averaging 5.32 digs per set, posting 20 or more digs in the last six matches.
About Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas --
The Javelinas are 5-3 in the young season, coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Barry University Classic. Returning for the Javelinas is senior right side Madison Brabham. Brabham nabbed the LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and currently leads the team with 112 kills, averaging 3.73 kills per set.
Freshman Emily North controls the setting duties for the Javelinas averaging 6.47 assists per set, while teammate Nicole Murff controls the back row averaging 4.90 digs per set and currently leads the team with 14 service aces.
Last year's meetings between these two teams had Kingsville coming out on top in straight sets both times.
About Texas A&M International University Dust Devils --
The Dust Devils have had a slow start going 1-8 through preseason, with their lone win coming against Franklin Pierce.
Junior transfer Annie Deininger currently leads the team, averaging 2.24 kills per set, hitting .220 on the young season.
Texas A&M International is a member of the Heartland Conference, which will combine with the Lone Star conference starting 2019.
