Box Score San Diego, CA – The University of San Diego Toreros (1-0) made quick work of the Mustangs (0-1), scoring 21 points in the first quarter alone. Toreros Anthony Lawrence wasted no time getting his team on the score board, with touchdowns at 10:42, 7:21 and 1:04 in the first quarter alone. The Toreros would score once more early in the second quarter going up 28-0.
It was not until late in the second quarter did the Mustangs turn it on.
With just under five minutes left in the half,
Blayne Armstrong (Ozark, MO/Marshfield) found
Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) for an 18 yard gain. The Mustangs would continue moving forward, with DeAndre (Last) rushing for 29 yards.
Elijah Jones (Gilbert, AZ/Campo Verde) would add 14 yards to put the Mustangs on the San Diego 14. A penalty would push the Mustangs back, before
Ignacio Correa (Midland, TX/Midland) stepped in to complete a 35-yard field goal to put the Mustangs on the board.
With little time left in the half the Mustangs sought out one more chance to score, but an interception by San Diego put an end to the drive.
Nolan Grigsby (Los Angeles, CA/Crenshaw) would come up with an interception for the Mustangs just before the half, leaving the field on a high note.
The Mustangs started off the second half with Armstrong finding
Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) and a 35 yard gain. Armstrong would then try to connect once more, before punting, starting the Torero drive on their one yard line. San Diego would score once more just under the eight minute mark.
It only took one play and less than 30 seconds into the drive for
Kourde Roberts (North Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) to respond with an 82 yard touchdown of his own shortly after. A bad snap had the Mustangs miss out on the extra point.
With a minute left in the third quarter, a field goal put San Diego up 38-9.
Both teams would go the rest of the game without scoring.
Blayne Armstrong (Ozark, MO/Marshfield) finished the day with 13-of-24 with 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Kourde Roberts (North Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) lead the team with 99 yards receiving.
The Mustangs are on the road again next weekend in an exhibition match up against the University of Idaho Vandals Saturday, Sept, 8 at 3:00 p.m. (MT)
