Maldonado, Castillo Blast Home Runs at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – Backed by a strong complete game performance by sophomore Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel), juniors Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) and Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) attempted to bring the Western New Mexico University softball team back over the final few innings, but Cameron held on for the 3-2 Lone Star Conference victory Sunday afternoon.

The teams were set to play a doubleheader originally, but due to weather on Saturday, that postponed the series until Sunday and the teams decided just to play the third and final game of the conference series and cancel game four.

Cameron (29-15, 16-11 LSC) opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Another sac fly and a double steal in the fourth inning plated two more runs to move the Aggies out to a 3-0 lead after four.

WNMU (4-41, 2-25 LSC) then started to work their way back into the game over the final two innings. In the sixth, with two quick outs on the board, Maldonado was ready to strike. On a 0-1 pitch, she drove a long ball over the right field fence for her 10th round tripper of the season to bring WNMU to within one at 3-1.

After Waddell worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, Castillo started the seventh with a bang. After working the count full, she lifted the pitch deep to right-center for a solo home run to pull the Lady Mustangs to within one at 3-2. Following an out, junior Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) singled through the left side to force Cameron to make a pitching change. Bethany Hines came on in relief and she kept WNMU at bay getting a pair of strikeouts to preserve the 3-2 victory.

The Lady Mustangs outhit Cameron 6-5 with Castillo tallying a pair of hits. Junior Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake), Maldonado, senior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) and Gastelum all added hits. Raley Long led Cameron with two hits.

Waddell was strong in the circle as all five hits she allowed were just singles. She also had a strikeout and ended up with the hard-luck loss (3-21). Rylee Willmon started for Cameron and she went the first 6.1 innings to get the win (15-8) after allowing just two earned runs. Hines went the final two-thirds to get her second save of the season.

WNMU will now return home for the final series of the regular season when they will host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a pair of doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday starting at noon. It will be Senior Day on Saturday for five Lady Mustangs including Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley), Garcia, Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro), Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Jefferson) and Victoria Arganda (San Bernardino, CA/Pacific).
