Cameron Uses Strong Pitching, Hitting in Opening DH Against Lady Mustangs

LAWTON, Okla. – It was a tough matchup for the Western New Mexico University softball team Friday night against Cameron. The Aggies held the Lady Mustangs to just five hits over the 10 innings in posting a pair of run-rule victories 13-0 and 16-0 in Lone Star Conference action.

Cameron (28-15, 15-11 LSC) had everything working on the night, as not only was the offense clicking, but the pitching of Rylee Willmon, Alyssa Osterdock and Bethany Hines kept WNMU (4-40, 2-24 LSC) to just five hits, all singles.

In the opener, WNMU picked up one of their hits in the first inning when senior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) singled with two outs, but was left stranded at first. Cameron plated a run in the home half for the 1-0 lead.
The second hit for the Lady Mustangs came in the second inning when redshirt sophomore Clarissa Moreno (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) singled, but was erased on a double play. That's when the Aggies took off, as in the home half they scored seven runs for an 8-0 lead.

Cameron plated another run in the third and then four more in the fourth to take a 13-0 lead. WNMU got a runner on in the fifth when redshirt freshman Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) battled to work a full-count walk. A pair of fielder's choices and then a groundout ended the game.

Brenna Busby led Cameron with three hits, three runs scored and four RBI. Callie Busby added three RBI.

In the circle, sophomore Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) started and went the four innings for WNMU to take the loss (3-20) as she allowed 13 earned runs. Willmon went the first three innings for Cameron to get the win (14-8) as she allowed just two hits. Osterdock tossed the final two innings and allowed just a walk.

WNMU started game two just like the opener as a single in the first inning had the Lady Mustangs off and running. This time, the hit came with one out when junior Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) singled through the left side. A pair of pop outs followed to end the inning.

Cameron really went on the offensive in game two, as they scored in all four innings. In their first turn at-bat, they plated two in the first. Then added seven in the second, six in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 16-0 lead.

WNMU had a two-out single in the second inning by freshman Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley). In the third, junior Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) was hit-by-pitch, but was later erased on a fielder's choice out. In the fourth, Habitzreuther singled to open the inning and then moved to second when junior Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) reached on an error by the centerfielder. Hines worked around the jam in the circle getting a fly out and fielder's choice out to end the frame. In their last at-bat, Maldonado worked a full-count walk before a groundout ended the game.

Callie Busby and Raley Long each tallied three hits for Cameron. Busby had three runs scored and three RBI, while her sister Brenna Busby added two hits, four runs scored and four RBI.

In the circle, Habitzreuther started for WNMU and went the first three innings and allowed 15 earned runs to take the loss (1-6). Waddell went the final inning and didn't allow a baserunner. Hines went all five innings for Cameron to grab the win (13-7) allowing just three hits and a walk.

WNMU and Cameron will conclude their four-game series tomorrow (Saturday) starting at noon Mountain Time. The first game of the series will count as a Lone Star Conference contest.
