Waddell Tosses Another Gem Against No. 25 Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Sophomore right-hander Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) continued her strong pitching performances from the past few weeks as she limited No. 25 Tarleton State to just two runs in six innings, but the TexAnns got an even better start from Jordan Withrow to claim the 2-0 win in the first game that counted as a Lone Star Conference contest. In the second game, a late home run helped open up a close game and sent Tarleton State to the 6-1 victory Saturday.

Waddell allowed just two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out two and didn't allow a walk. She has been on a roll as of late, since the West Texas A&M game on Mar. 10 in which she went all seven innings and allowed just three runs, Waddell has allowed just 13 earned runs in 26 innings.

In the opener, WNMU (2-29, 0-15 LSC) threatened out of the gate as junior Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) drew a full-count walk and then swiped second. A strikeout and a pair of foul outs followed to end the inning. Tarleton State (30-6, 12-6 LSC) put together a two-out rally in the home half of the inning getting three hits to drive in a run for the 1-0 lead after one.

Redshirt sophomore Clarissa Moreno (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) doubled with two outs in the second, but was left stranded following a strikeout. The next baserunner reached in the fifth when junior Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) singled, but again Withrow locked it down getting a strikeout, a fielder's choice out and caught stealing to keep it a 1-0 contest.

The Lady Mustangs had their best chance to strike in the sixth. Freshman Dominique Gonzales (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) put down an opportunistic bunt for a single to open the inning. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and later to third on a single by junior Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola). With runners at the corners, a grounder to second was handled and thrown home to pick off the second out of the inning. Freshman Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) battled a worked an eight-pitch walk to load the bases. Withrow got the big out again, as a pop out to third ended the inning.

The TexAnns tacked on the final run of the game on two hits in the sixth to move ahead 2-0. Withrow kept WNMU from making it exciting in the seventh, getting the Lady Mustangs in order to pick up the win.

Maldonado, Castillo, Moreno and Gonzales all had a hit for WNMU. Megan Durante and Tanna Huie each posted two hits to lead Tarleton State. Huie and Karli Herron drove in the runs for the TexAnns.

In the circle, Waddell took the tough-luck loss (2-13) despite another strong complete game performance. Withrow collected her 16th win (16-4) of the season, allowing just four hits and two walks, along with eight strikeouts.

The second game, in which counted as a regional only contest, Tarleton State used a pair of doubles in the first inning to move out to a 2-0 lead.

A two-out RBI single back to the pitcher brought in the third run of the game for the TexAnns in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. WNMU pushed their first run across in the fifth. With two outs, redshirt freshman Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) doubled down the left field line and then came home on an RBI single to right by junior Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) leaving Tarleton State with a 3-1 lead.

Herron then delivered the big blow in the home half of the fifth when she launched a three-run homer with two outs to push the TexAnns to a 6-1 lead.
WNMU threatened in the seventh when Paredes-Alvarez and Castillo opened the frame with back-to-back singled, but a pop out, strikeout and ground out ended the game.

Maldonado, Paredes-Alvarez, Castillo, Habitzreuther, Gastelum and Gonzales all had hits for WNMU. Gastelum picked up the only RBI. Maddie Quintanar and Durante each had two hits for Tarleton State, while Herron had three RBI with the big home run.

In the circle, Habitzreuther started and went the first five innings for the Lady Mustangs and ended up with the loss (0-4). Waddell came on for the final inning and didn't allow a baserunner. Megan Rosewell picked up the win (9-0) for Tarleton State as she allowed just one earned run on six hits along with three strikeouts and no walks.

WNMU will now return home to host Midwestern State with doubleheaders both Thursday and Friday starting at noon each day.
