Coplan Tallies Four Hits in Doubleheader Against Texas Woman’s

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Junior Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) did all she could to help the Western New Mexico University softball team, as she posted four total hits, two in each game Friday against Texas Woman's. The Pioneers just had too much offense and pitching as they swept the Lone Star Conference doubleheader 8-0 and 12-1 in five innings.

In the opener, Texas Woman's (8-6, 2-3 LSC) started right away when Tylia Sylestine launched a solo home run in the first inning. WNMU (1-18, 0-8 LSC) threatened to get right back into it in the home half. Coplan began things with a single and after she stole second, a pair of strikeouts followed. That's when both redshirt freshman Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) and freshman Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) walked to load the bases. Abby Walker settled down and got a foul out to third to end the threat.

Texas Woman's added two more in the second, another in the third and two more in the fifth. Coplan opened the third inning with a single, but was erased trying to steal. Coplan reached via an error in the fifth, but was left stranded and in the sixth, senior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) singled, but a pair of groundouts and fly out ended the inning.

The Pioneers finished the scoring with a run each in the sixth and seventh innings for the 8-0 victory. Texas Woman's held a 16-3 advantage on hits and they committed the only error. Coplan went 2-4 leading off and Garcia added the other hit. Walker and Cheyenne Mahy collected three hit games, while Lindy Kennedy, Sylestine, Jordan Kisselburg and Erin Mosely had two hits each. Mahy drove in three runs.

In the circle, Walker went all seven innings to get the win for TWU (3-4) as she allowed just three hits and three walks, along with one hit batter. Sophomore Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) started for WNMU and went the first four innings to take the loss (1-9) as she allowed six earned runs. Sophomore Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) went the final three innings and allowed just two earned runs.

In the second game, Texas Woman's used a big third inning and never looked back. Before they got to the third, they tallied two runs in the first. WNMU nearly came right back with Coplan and Garcia each singling. After both advanced on wild pitches, a pair of groundouts ended the inning.

The Lady Mustangs cut the deficit in half in the second. Junior Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) singled to open the frame. After moving to second on a wild pitch, a strikeout and fielder's choice out had a runner on second with two outs. Senior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) singled off the pitcher to put runners on the corners and then Coplan slapped one to third that was handled, but the throw was off to first allowing her to be safe and junior Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) to cross with an unearned run. Mahy limited the damage getting a strikeout to leave the Pioneers with a 2-1 lead after two.

TWU began to pull away in the third when they batted around, scoring five runs on six hits to take a 7-1 lead. They would add three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to open up a 12-1 lead.

Down to their last at-bat, WNMU had things cooking when Coplan singled and then Garcia reached on a fielder's choice, throwing error by the shortstop. Mahy stopped it right there as she added a strikeout and ground out to end the game.

Kisselburg went 4-4 with five RBI to pace the Pioneers. Hazel Puempel added three hits. Coplan led the Lady Mustangs with two more hits. Castillo added a 2-2 game as well.

In the circle, Mahy went all five innings for TWU to collect the win (4-1) as she allowed just one unearned run. O'Neill started for WNMU and ended up with the loss (0-6) after going the first three innings and allowing seven earned runs. Waddell tossed the next inning and allowed three earned runs, while Habitzreuther pitched the final inning and allowed two earned runs.
