Women's Basketball Look to Continue Win Streak at Thanksgiving Tournament

Silver City, N.M—Women's Basketball head up to Grand Junction, Colorado to take on former RMAC foes Western State- Colorado and host institution Colorado Mesa.
 
After an exciting overtime thriller over Fort Lewis College, and a come from behind win over New Mexico Highlands the Lady Mustangs look to build on their 2-0 start to the season. Sophomore, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) picked up right where she left off last season, contributing 14 points, three rebounds and two assists against the Skyhawks. Senior, Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) came up just short of a double-double against Fort Lewis tallying 11 points and 9 rebounds. Junior transfer, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy ) kicked off the regular season with a bang, contributing 17 points on 6-9 shooting, and 5-7 from three-point range against Highlands.Teammate, Tatyanna McFarland's (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) double-double, 17 points -16 rebounds, against Highlands fueled the comeback and gave the women's team their second 2-0 start under Head Coach Lauren Unger.
 
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
 
The Colorado Mesa Mavericks enter the weekend 1-1 after opening their season at the Dixie State Tournament last weekend. Senior guard, Jaylyn Duran leads the Mavericks with 53 points on back-to-back 20-point games. Defensively, Sydni Brandon has racked up 21 rebounds in the young season and leads the team with 11 assists. The Mavericks were picked to finish 7th in the preseason RMAC Coaches Poll.
 
After dropping exhibition matches to the University of Wyoming and the Air Force Academy, the Mountaineers kick off their regular season this weekend. In their match up against Wyoming, Jadyn Kanzier led all shooters with nine points on 3-for-9. Chandler Willis led the defensive efforts with nine rebounds. Western State was picked to finish 12th in the preseason poll.
 
 
The Mustangs tip-off in the first match of the tournament at 12 p.m. against Western State. Saturday's match features the Mustangs and the home team, Colorado Mesa in the 5 p.m. match.
