McFarland's Double-Double Fuels Win Over Cowgirls

Box Score Portales, N.M—In their second game of the Conference Challenge the Western New Mexico Women's Basketball team faced up against in-state foe New Mexico Highlands.

Coming off a thrilling overtime win nearly 24 hours before, the Lady Mustangs looked to start the season 2-0 for the second time under Head Coach Lauren Unger. In Coach Unger's first season (16'-17') the Mustangs defeated Oklahoma Pandhandle State (87-61) and Rogers State (63-61) to open the season.

Trailing by 10 going into the half, the Mustangs were led by Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) who contributed seven points and 11 rebounds through the first two quarters.

A 7-0 run by Western cut into the Highlands lead to one with three minutes left in the third. A nearly four-minute scoring drought by the Cowgirls brought the Mustangs back in, tied at 27 going into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was all Western, outscoring their opponents 21-4 on the way to a 50-34 win.

McFarland had a big night finishing with a double-double on 17 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Rodriguez caught fire in the fourth adding another 17 points for the Mustangs on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range.

The Mustangs take a break next week before traveling to Grand Junction for the Colorado Mesa Holiday Inn and Suites Thanksgiving Classic. Friday's matchup with feature the Mustangs take on Western State at 12 p.m., before taking on the home team on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
