The Falcons took advantage of an early error to build a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in taking the 8-0 five inning victory over the Lady Mustangs in Lone Star Conference action. With one on a two outs, UTPB (6-31, 3-16 LSC) got things going with an error to prolong the inning. After the error, the Falcons pieced together a single to center before Cindy Juarez drilled the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a grand slam and 4-0 lead. UT Permian Basin tallied another run in the second to move in front 5-0 and WNMU (1-35, 0-19 LSC) nearly got their own rally going off of an error in the third. With one out, junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) hit one to third that was misplayed for the error. Senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) followed with a single down the left field line, but on the play, Gutierrez was thrown out at third. A strikeout followed to end the inning. A Samantha Rodriguez solo homer in the fourth pushed the Falcons lead to 6-0 before they knocked in the final two runs of the game in the fifth. Rodriguez delivered a big two out single to first base that brought in a pair of runs to increase the advantage to 8-0. That meant the Lady Mustangs needed to score at least a run to keep the game going. Sophomore Bailey McFarland (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks ) opened the frame with a single up the middle, but then a pair of fly outs and a ground out ended the game. UTPB held a 10-2 edge on hits with Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and McFarland tallying the two hits for the Lady Mustangs. Daisy Aguilar and Rodriguez each posted two hit games to lead UTPB. Juarez drove in a game-high four RBI with her first inning grand slam. In the circle, Kylee Foster limited the Lady Mustangs to just two hits and two total baserunners as she went all five innings to pick up the win (3-10) for the Falcons. Redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started for WNMU and went the first two innings and ended up with the loss (0-13) after giving up five runs, one earned. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went the final three innings and gave up three earned runs. The two teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Print Friendly Version
