No. 12/No. 11 Texans Overpower Men’s Basketball

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – No. 12/No. 11 Tarleton State has been ranked throughout the season and they continue to prove why they are one of the top teams in the nation as they utilized a big rebounding advantage to dominate second-chance points and points in the paint on their way to taking the 86-45 Lone Star Conference win on Saturday over the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team.

TSU (20-3, 11-2 LSC) held a 54-35 edge on the glass and turned that into a 30-3 advantage on second-chance points and 50-26 on points in the paint. WNMU (2-19, 0-13 LSC) was paced by three in double-figures with junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) going for 12 points and seven rebounds, followed by 10 points apiece from sophomores Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) and Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ). Senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) added eight points.

The Texans hit on the first five points of the game before McCray got the Mustangs on the board two minutes in with a jumper. Tarleton State then took over both on the offensive and defensive end going on a 15-0 run and holding the Mustangs without a point for nearly six minutes to take a 20-2 lead.

With five minutes to go before the break, WNMU reeled off a 6-0 run with Enriquez hitting a layup, redshirt freshman Trevin Ramirez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) added a layup and the Mustangs capped the run with two from the line from Spivey leaving the Texans with the 36-19 lead.

TSU outscored the Mustangs by six over the final few minutes of the half to take a 46-23 lead into the locker rooms.

Range scored the first points for WNMU over a minute into the second half to get back to within 23, just to watch the Texans put the game out of reach with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes.

Romond Jenkins had a monster game for Tarleton State as he went for the double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds. If that wasn't enough, he also had six blocks and four steals in 25 minutes. Chantz Chambers reached double-figures with 12 points.

WNMU shot 30 percent (16-53) from the field, 1-14 (7) from three and 12-14 (86) at the foul line. TSU answered making 34-80 (43), 8-27 (30) from three and 10-17 (59) at the foul line.

The Mustangs will have a quick turnaround as they will play at Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday night starting at 7:30 p.m. The Greyhounds pulled off the upset win at Texas A&M-Commerce 72-65 earlier today.
