Aggies Use Second Half to Pull Away From Mustangs

LAWTON, Okla. – Holding a three-point lead and being within striking range all first half, the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team was down just four at halftime against Cameron. The Aggies responded with a big second half to take the 86-66 Lone Star Conference victory Thursday night.

Seven players scored at least four points with sophomore Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) leading the way with 16 points. He also added five rebounds. Sophomore Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) was right behind with 13 points, along with six assists, while redshirt freshman Trevin Ramirez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) hit 10 points on 4-8 shooting. Junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) brought down eight rebounds. WNMU (2-21, 0-15 LSC) used seven three-pointers through the first 20 minutes to keep things close, while holding Cameron (16-10, 9-7 LSC) to just 34 percent shooting.

Enriquez got the Mustangs on the board just over two minutes in with a long ball. Senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) pushed WNMU in front when he hit his own three-pointer at the 16:01 mark for the 6-3 advantage. After Cameron tied the game, Range stepped back and hit another long ball for the 9-6 lead.

The Aggies looked ready to take off with the 16-10 lead near the midway point of the half, but the Mustangs kept coming as they utilized an 8-0 run to regain the lead. During the stretch, Ramirez started the run with a deep ball and after he hit a layup, freshman Alex Gonzalez Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/Xperia Zentro San Jorge) hit a three to cap the spurt.

After McCray knotted the game up once again at 23, the Aggies went on an 8-0 run before McCray hit a foul shot and Enriquez hit a three to close out the first 20 minutes with Cameron ahead 31-27.

Freshman Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) got WNMU on the board nearly two minutes into the second half to get back to within six points. Cameron used another run to get the lead into double-digits, but the Mustangs kept fighting back. Enriquez cut the lead back to single digits with a three and a fastbreak layup by McCray had the deficit back to five at 41-36 with 13:37 to play in the game.

WNMU got to within seven a couple of times, with the last coming at 9:35 to play on a pair of foul shots by McCray before Cameron went on a run to put the game out of reach. The Aggies went on a 13-1 run to go on to take the victory.

Four players led Cameron with Tyus Momoh going for 18 points, followed by 16 from Tyler Williams, 15 from Delvonte Pierre and 14 from Trey Hall. Stacey Lambert and JV Long each brought down nine rebounds.
