Nationally-Ranked Angelo State Takes Down Lady Mustangs

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Facing the highest-ranked team in the Lone Star Conference, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team ran into a buzz saw Thursday night with No. 11 Angelo State claiming the 105-52 victory.

ASU (14-1, 8-1 LSC) scored at least 24 points in every quarter and made 61 percent from the field to roll to the win. WNMU (4-12, 0-9 LSC) made 38 percent (21-55) from the field and did well in the second half hitting on 13-29 (45).

Three reached double-figures to lead the Lady Mustangs with senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) tallying 16 points on 7-15 shooting and 2-5 from three. In a rarity this season, she did not go to the foul line. Gutierrez also added two rebounds and two assists in playing all 40 minutes once again. Junior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) added 15 points, along with four rebounds and two assists. Junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) made 4-11 from the field and 2-5 from downtown in reaching her 12 points. Her five rebounds tied for the team-high with senior Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) as she came off the bench to add seven points in addition to her five rebounds.

Gutierrez turned an early defensive rebound into the first points of the game 41 seconds in when she hit a jumper in the paint. That ended up being the only lead of the game for the Lady Mustangs. The Rambelles came back with a 15-0 run and never looked back.

WNMU scored in double-figures in all but the second quarter, reaching a high of 16 in the third. Despite the big surge by ASU, the Lady Mustangs did fight back in the first quarter to get back to within 11 putting up a 12-point frame. Botelho, Brown and Gutierrez all contributed points the remainder of the first quarter.

After trailing 55-21 at the half, WNMU was never able to get back to within range as despite a 31-point second half, the Lady Mustangs were still outscored by 19.

WNMU made 6-18 (33) from three and shot just six foul shots making four (67). ASU couldn't miss throughout most of the game making 42-69 (61), 11-20 from three (55) and 10-15 (67) at the free throw line. The Rambelles used a solid advantage on bench points (51-7) and points in the paint (56-18).

Christian Robinson led five in double-figures for Angelo State going for a game-high 20 points. Jasmine Prophet added 17 and Chenelle Pelle with 15 off the bench.

The Lady Mustangs will remain on the road this Saturday when they will play at Texas A&M-Kingsville starting at 4 p.m. Central Time. The Javelinas stayed with Eastern New Mexico throughout the first half before falling, 52-63.
