Three Players Reach Double-Digit Scoring for Mustangs at Rams

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Backed by strong games from senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon), junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) and sophomore Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ), the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team stayed close with Angelo State as long as they could before the Rams pulled away for the 97-61 Lone Star Conference victory on Thursday evening.

Enriquez and Spivey each scored 13 points, while Range added 11 to lead the way for WNMU (2-14, 0-8 LSC). Freshman Alex Gonzalez Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/Xperia Zentro San Jorge) continues to find his stroke from the outside as he made three three-pointers on his way to recording nine points. Spivey just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and he had a strong shooting night making 5-8.

Spivey gave the Mustangs their first points of the night just over a minute in when he turned in his steal with a jumper in the paint for the 2-0 lead. Spivey helped WNMU regain the lead a few minutes later taking an offensive rebound and putting it back in for the 4-3 lead.

Angelo State (11-4, 3-4 LSC) used a 5-0 run in less than a minute to push in front by four and never look back. Range and Spivey helped trim the deficit back to three six minutes into the first half when Range dialed long distance and Spivey split a pair at the line.

The Rams jumped the lead to 20 near the midway point of the half, but WNMU didn't go away. The Mustangs got back to within 12 with two minutes to play on a jumper by freshman Tyshaun Copper (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Collegiate Prep School). ASU added two points to their advantage to take a 42-28 lead into the locker rooms.

Angelo State benefited from a 50 percent shooting clip over the first 20 minutes, while WNMU countered with a 33 percent effort.

Following a quick start to the second stanza by the Rams, WNMU fought back to within 12 once again with Enriquez hitting a jumper and Range converting a three-point-play. Enriquez stepped back to hit a three at the 13:42 mark to leave the deficit at 16 before ASU began to pour it on. The Rams moved the lead into the 20's and never stopped on their way to claiming the victory.

Quay King led the Rams with 28 points as he hit on seven three-pointers. Thomas Tshikaya nearly tallied a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

WNMU ended up making 35 percent (22-63) from the field, 24 percent (6-25) from three and 61 percent (11-18) at the foul line. ASU answered with a 53 percent effort (32-60) from the field, 61 percent (14-23) from three and 56 percent (19-34) at the foul line.

WNMU held close to ASU on points in the paint (32-28) and points off turnovers (16-10), while the Rams pulled away in second-chance points (15-6) and fastbreak points (13-2).

The road swing continues this Saturday when the Mustangs will play at Texas A&M-Kingsville starting at 2 p.m. Central Time. The Javelinas got past Eastern New Mexico 72-64 earlier tonight.
