Lady Mustangs Dominate Cameron in Friday Night Sweep

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Lady Mustangs were clicking on all cylinders Friday as the Western New Mexico University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 sweep against Lone Star opponent Cameron University (25-15, 25-14, 25-20) inside Drag's Court.

WNMU dominated at the net posting a .369 hitting percentage, while holding the Aggies to just .120. They held a 46-30 edge in kills and 8-1 edge in blocks. If that wasn't enough, assists (46-29), service aces (7-1) and digs (52-44) were all with the Lady Mustangs.

The Lady Mustangs (9-4, 1-1 LSC) come out firing right from the start hitting .472 in the first set with 18 kills to just one error in 36 swings. With the lead at just a few points, a pair of errors by the Aggies (2-10, 0-4 LSC) helped move WNMU to a seven-point spread following a kill by junior Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow ). Freshman Hannah Tishlarich (Elk Grove, CA/Pleasant Grove) moved the Lady Mustangs a point away with a kill at 24-13 and then a service error sealed the 25-15 set win.

Senior Shannon Rich (Folsom, CA/Folsom) took over to start the second with a solo block and later a kill around an attack error by the Aggies to take the 3-0 lead. The lead reached nine at 15-6 on another kill by Rich. Cameron made a late run to get back to within eight at 22-14, just to watch WNMU put the set away after a few Aggie errors, junior Melanie Hughes (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King Jr.) spun in a service ace for the 25-14 second set win.

The third set was tight through the first 23 points with WNMU holding a slight 13-10 lead. Freshman Cristal Carrizoza (Phoenix, AZ/North), Verrill and junior Samantha Haupeakui (San Mateo, CA/Aragon) put together a quick 3-0 run with kills to help move the lead to 16-10 and the Lady Mustangs never looked back. Junior Morgan Lyneis (Victorville, CA/Apple Valley) moved WNMU to match point with a kill at 24-16 and then the Aggies fought back scoring four straight points before freshman Kali Iago (Tucson, AZ/Cienega) ended the set and the match with a kill at 25-20.
