SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Lady Mustangs were clicking on all cylinders Friday as the Western New Mexico University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 sweep against Lone Star opponent Cameron University (25-15, 25-14, 25-20) inside Drag's Court.
WNMU dominated at the net posting a .369 hitting percentage, while holding the Aggies to just .120. They held a 46-30 edge in kills and 8-1 edge in blocks. If that wasn't enough, assists (46-29), service aces (7-1) and digs (52-44) were all with the Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs (9-4, 1-1 LSC) come out firing right from the start hitting .472 in the first set with 18 kills to just one error in 36 swings. With the lead at just a few points, a pair of errors by the Aggies (2-10, 0-4 LSC) helped move WNMU to a seven-point spread following a kill by junior
Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow ). Freshman
Hannah Tishlarich (Elk Grove, CA/Pleasant Grove) moved the Lady Mustangs a point away with a kill at 24-13 and then a service error sealed the 25-15 set win.
Senior
Shannon Rich (Folsom, CA/Folsom) took over to start the second with a solo block and later a kill around an attack error by the Aggies to take the 3-0 lead. The lead reached nine at 15-6 on another kill by Rich. Cameron made a late run to get back to within eight at 22-14, just to watch WNMU put the set away after a few Aggie errors, junior
Melanie Hughes (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King Jr.) spun in a service ace for the 25-14 second set win.
The third set was tight through the first 23 points with WNMU holding a slight 13-10 lead. Freshman
Cristal Carrizoza (Phoenix, AZ/North), Verrill and junior
Samantha Haupeakui (San Mateo, CA/Aragon) put together a quick 3-0 run with kills to help move the lead to 16-10 and the Lady Mustangs never looked back. Junior
Morgan Lyneis (Victorville, CA/Apple Valley) moved WNMU to match point with a kill at 24-16 and then the Aggies fought back scoring four straight points before freshman
Kali Iago (Tucson, AZ/Cienega) ended the set and the match with a kill at 25-20.
Several players had big offensive nights led by 10 kills apiece from Rich and Haupeakui. Rich hit .714 (10-0-14), while Haupeakui hit .529 (10-1-17). Verrill added eight kills and hit .471 (8-0-17). Hughes led the team in assists with 24, while freshman
Bailey Gin (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) added 12. Junior
Kalie Lyle (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O' Connor ) had three service aces, while Hughes added two. Junior
Ashley Mataele (Laie, HI/Kahuku) came away with 18 digs and Lyle posted double-figures with 11. The block party was out in full force with Rich and Haupeakui each posting four, with Rich having one solo block. Verrill had three, with one of hers coming solo as well.
Jenna Gillean paced Cameron with 10 kills and hit .318.
WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will host Midwestern State tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 3 p.m. Midwestern State fought back to defeat Eastern New Mexico, 3-2, earlier tonight.
