LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Concordia University Irvine came in with a 6-0 mark and the Western New Mexico University softball team took them right down to the wire before the Eagles squeaked out the 4-3 victory Sunday to conclude the Desert Stinger.
The hit total was low with Concordia Irvine holding just a 5-4 edge, while the teams combined for five errors.
The Eagles (7-0) opened the game scoring an unearned run in the first inning. WNMU (3-7) answered in the second and took their first lead of the game. Freshman

Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) who reached on a fielder's choice. Senior
Alicia Enriquez (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) pushed WNMU in front with a two out double to left-center to bring home Gastelum, as the Lady Mustangs converted an earlier error by the Eagles.
Concordia Irvine came back with a run in the home half of the second to even the game at two.
The Lady Mustangs regained the lead in the fourth with another unearned run. Freshman
Clarissa Moreno (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) was hit-by-pitch and quickly came home on a single by Gastelum and error by the left fielder to take the 3-2 lead.
Just like the second inning, the Eagles came right back to answer in the home half to tie the game at three.
It remained even into the sixth when Concordia Irvine pushed across the go-ahead run. With two outs, a big error opened the door as the Eagles later had a big double by Chavez to bring in the fourth run and a 4-3 lead.
Harvey was able to hold the lead for the Eagles in the seventh as she came on in relief to pitch the final three innings and allow just one hit to pick up the win (4-0).
Redshirt junior
Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) stayed right with Harvey as she went all six innings and picked up the hard-luck loss (1-4) despite giving up just three earned runs and also added four strikeouts.
Gastelum paced the offense with two hits. Five players had a hit for the Eagles.
WNMU will be back on the road this coming week when they will compete in the Dixie State Tournament Feb. 12-14.
