Road Trip Continues for Men’s Basketball as They Open LSC Play

CANYON/ODESSA, Texas – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team stays on the road this week as they will begin Lone Star Conference play against No. 24 West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin.

The Mustangs are 1-4 overall on the season and are currently on a four-game losing streak. Two of those losses came by single digits against Oklahoma Panhandle (86-77) and New Mexico Highlands (77-70). WNMU is 0-2 away from home so far this season.

Sophomore Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) has led the team in scoring in four of the five games, averaging 19.8 points per game, along with 4.8 rebounds, 11 assists and three steals. Junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) is averaging a double-double with 13.2 points and 13.4 rebounds, he has four straight double-doubles. Senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) is third in scoring at 10.2 points and adds 6.2 rebounds. The Mustangs average 73.0 points and allow 80.2 points. They make 38 percent from the field and allow 40 percent.

WNMU ranks in the top-three in the conference in defensive rebounds per game (31.20), second in the conference and 12th nationally, second and 38th nationally in fewest turnovers (59) and third and 46th nationally in turnovers per game (11.8).

Enriquez and Spivey are ranked in several categories in the conference. Enriquez leads the conference in minutes per game (33:30), second and 73rd nationally in points per game (19.8), fourth and 70th nationally in free throws made (30) and fourth and 75th nationally in free throw attempts (39). Spivey leads the conference in defensive rebounds per game (9.20), second nationally and also leads in double-doubles (4), sixth nationally. He leads the nation in rebounds per game (13.4), second and 22nd in total rebounds (67), third and 13th in offensive rebounds per game (4.20) and third in field goal percentage (55.1).

First up on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. (Central Time) will be a matchup with No. 24 West Texas A&M. The Buffs are 8-1 this season and have played two similar opponents in New Mexico Highlands (92-77) and Oklahoma Panhandle (105-66). Their only loss this season was against Lubbock Christian. They are 5-0 at home this season.

Returning Preseason Player of the Year David Chavlovich powers West Texas A&M as he averages 19.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 44 assists, a block and 18 steals. Jordan Evans adds 14.9 points and Jerrod Walton chips in 10.7 points. The Buffs average 90.0 points per game and allow 78.1. They make 47 percent from the field and allow 46 percent.

To close the trip on Saturday at 4 p.m. (Central Time) will be a matchup with UT Permian Basin. The Falcons are off to a strong start as well at 7-1. Their only loss was against Southeastern Oklahoma (79-62). They are 2-0 at home this season and will face Eastern New Mexico on Thursday.

UT Permian Basin features a high-flying offense averaging 102 points per game led by Daeshon Francis' 21.4 points per game. He also grabs 9.1 rebounds. Three other players average in double-figures include Johnnie Lacy (17.5), James McPherson (15.6) and Josh Morris (11.6). They allow 86 points per game, make 49 percent from the field and allow 41 percent.
