ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Sophomore Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) and newcomer Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) paced the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team pouring in 15 points apiece in an exhibition contest at Division I New Mexico Wednesday night. The Lobos came away with the 113-57 victory.
Giron started the scoring right away as he collected an offensive rebound and putback 33 seconds into the game to push WNMU ahead 2-0. Enriquez got into the act a few minutes later helping to snap a 7-0 New Mexico run with a deep ball to leave the Lobos with the 7-5 advantage.
WNMU was able to keep the deficit at 10 nearly midway through the first half following another bucket by Giron, this time on the fast break leaving UNM with the 19-9 lead.
The Lobos piled it on over the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 59-27 lead into the locker rooms.
Giron came out firing in the second half hitting a foul shot, a three-pointer and then a jumper all within the first three minutes to account for the first six points for WNMU out of the break. His three pulled the Mustangs as close as they would get the rest of the way down 30 with UNM outscoring WNMU by 26 the rest of the way to claim the exhibition win.
Enriquez cleaned up at the charity stripe hitting 10 foul shots on his way to his 15 points. Giron went 6-11 from the field, including 2-5 from deep. Senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) and sophomore Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) added seven points each. Junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Lobos were led by Damien Jefferson's 16 points as five players scored in double-figures. Xavier Adams and Joe Furstinger each pulled down eight rebounds.
