Women’s Basketball to Face UTEP, Northern New Mexico This Upcoming Week

EL PASO, Texas/SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will see their second Division I team of the season Thursday night when they play UTEP in an exhibition at 7 p.m. They will then return home to match-up with Northern New Mexico on Monday night in Drag's Court at 6 p.m.

The Lady Mustangs are off to a 2-1 start with wins over Oklahoma Panhandle and Rogers State. They ran into a tough Fort Lewis team this past Monday to suffer their first loss of the season. Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) has found her game to start the season leading the team in scoring in two of the games, averaging 18.0 points per game. Juniors Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) and Jeylynn Fields (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande) are second at 12.3 per contest. Botelho and junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) lead in rebounds at 4.3, Gutierrez has 10 assists, Clark with two blocks and junior Shoniquia Coleman (Austin, TX/Colony) with eight steals. WNMU is averaging 68.0 points and allowing 64.7. They make 39 percent from the field, 30 from three and 80 from the charity stripe. Opponents are at 40 percent from the field, 23 percent from three and 61 percent at the foul line.

First up will be the exhibition with UTEP on Thursday night. The Miners are 0-2 on the season losing to Northern Arizona and Texas Southern. They did play an earlier exhibition against Division II St. Mary's taking the 72-54 victory. UTEP is led by Sparkle Taylor's 21.0 points per game, she also leads the team in rebounds grabbing 9.0 per contest. The next closest scorer is Axelle Bernard at 8.0 per game. The Miners average 59.5 points and allow 77.0. They make 33 percent from the field, 19 percent from three and 65 percent at the foul line. Opponents answer making 44 percent from the field, 36 from three and 64 at the charity stripe.

WNMU will then be off until Monday when they host Northern New Mexico at 6 p.m. The Eagles are 4-2 this season with wins against Dine College, University of the Southwest (twice) and Adams State. In addition to playing Adams State, they also faced MSU Denver (78-53) and Regis (82-50) falling in both meetings. They will play Adams State and then an exhibition with Fort Lewis before traveling to Silver City. Three are averaging in double-figures led by 13.4 per game from RaeAnne Herrera. Ashley John adds 13.0 and Cheyenne Cordova with 11.0. John leads the team in rebounding at 7.8. They average 74.8 points per game and allow 60.8. They make 43 percent from the field, 29 percent from three and 73 percent from the foul line. Opponents are at 35 percent from the field, 28 percent from three and 60 percent at the charity stripe.
