Embry Riddle, New Mexico Highlands on the Horizon This Week for Mustangs

PRESCOTT, Ariz./SILVER CITY, N.M. – A quick trip to Prescott awaits the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team this Wednesday, before closing the week with in-state rival New Mexico Highlands on Friday night at 6 p.m. inside Drag's Court.

WNMU (1-1) is coming off of a split against Oklahoma Panhandle State winning the first game, 83-73, before falling on Saturday, 77-86. Sophomore Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) is off to a good start, leading the team in scoring both nights as he piled up games of 25 and 20 to average 22.5 per game. He also grabbed 6.0 rebounds, eight assists, a steal and connected on five three-pointers. Junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) is averaging a double-double with 13 points and 11.5 rebounds as he finished Saturday's game with a double-double scoring 17 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. Freshman Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) (11.5), sophomore Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) (10.5) and senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) (10.5) each average in double-figures in terms of scoring. Range is also close to averaging a double-double with 9.0 rebounds. The Mustangs average 80.0 points per game and allow 79.5. They have connected on 39 percent, 25 from three-point and 64 percent at the line. Opponents are making 37 percent from the field, 27 from long range and 68 percent at the charity stripe.

First up the Mustangs will go against Embry Riddle at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night. The Eagles, who are an NAIA school, have played seven games so far going 2-5 with wins over University of the Southwest and San Diego Christian. This will be their fourth home game of the season going 1-2 so far. They average 77.9 points per game and allow 90.4. They have connected on 175-389 from the field and 51-138 from three-point range. Opponents are 212-451 from the floor and 81-206 from long range. Three are averaging in double-figures led by both Nick Johnson and Gilbert Ibarra posting 11.1 per game. Joseph Jewell adds another 10.7 per game. Ibarra leads the team in rebounding at 5.0 per game.

To close the week on Friday night at 6 p.m. will be a meeting with in-state rival and former RMAC opponent New Mexico Highlands. The Cowboys are 0-2 on the season having come close in a pair of tough games to start the season in Lone Star Conference teams Eastern New Mexico (80-77) and West Texas A&M (92-77). This will mark their third straight road game coming into Silver City. NMHU averages 77.0 points per game and allow 86.0. They make 38 percent from the field, 15 percent from three and 70 percent at the foul line. Opponents are making 43 percent from the floor, 29 from three and 63 at the foul line. The starting five has been the same through the first two games in Marlon Johnson, Kieran Woods, Ron Lawton, James Healy and Chris Clark, Jr. Four of them average in double-figures scoring led by Johnson's 18.5 per game. He also leads the team in rebounds at 9.5. It will be the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams as they will then play in Las Vegas on Nov. 29.
Last year, the Cowboys swept the season series winning both games by 20 points.
