Aggies Connect on 14 Three-Pointers to Edge Men’s Basketball

SILVER CITY, N.M. – A night after hitting just seven three-pointers on 43 attempts, Oklahoma Panhandle State was able to make 14-of-34 (41) from downtown on Saturday night to help lead them to the 86-77 victory over the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team.

Five players made a three-pointer for OPSU (1-1) with Jake Regier hitting five and Malcolm Glanville with four. Glanville had a big game going for a game-high 30 points, making 8-15 from the field and 10 free throws.

Sophomore Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) led WNMU (1-1) for the second straight night with 20 points on 6-15 shooting and six free throws. He also added eight rebounds and six assists. Junior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) filled up the stat sheet going for a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds, along with two assists and a block. Sophomore Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) (12) and senior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) (11) also scored in double-figures. Freshman Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) just missed a double-double himself with nine points and 13 rebounds.

Each team held three points lead early in the first half with OPSU moving out to a 5-2 lead before WNMU moved in front 13-10 on a three-pointer by Giron and jumper by Range off the fastbreak. It remained close throughout the half when Regier got loose for one of his three-pointers to give OPSU the biggest lead of the first half at the time of four at 25-21 with 6:47 to play in the half. With the Aggies in front 35-34, the Mustangs started to catch fire when freshman CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) hit a layup, Giron a jumper, Spivey a layup and then a jumper by Enriquez made for a quick 8-0 run and 42-35 lead with 31 seconds to go before the break. OPSU relied on another one of their long balls before the final buzzer of the half as Jaden Whitfield hit the trey to leave WNMU with the 42-38 halftime lead.

OPSU started the second half strong going on a 15-5 run to turn a four-point halftime deficit into a six point lead at 53-47 four minutes in. McCray helped bring WNMU back to even with a three-pointer at the 12:19 mark, just to watch OPSU unleash another run, this one a 7-0 variety for the 64-57 lead at the midway point of the half.

Every time the Mustangs tried to get close, the Aggies had the answer. Vanbeekum took over a few minutes later converting a three-point-play and then hitting a three-pointer at the 7:06 mark to leave the deficit at just two, 67-65. OPSU answered on the next trip down the floor and WNMU wasn't able to get any closer with the Aggies keeping the separation at least four points ahead.

OPSU made 27-61 (44) from the field, while WNMU hit on 29-80 (36). OPSU held the edge on three-pointers (14-7) and at the foul line (18-12). The Mustangs hit the glass with a 54-40 advantage on rebounds and that led to a strong 40-18 edge on points in the paint.

WNMU will hit the road this coming Wednesday as they will play at NAIA Embry Riddle (Ariz.) in Prescott with tipoff set for 6 p.m.
