Volleyball Gets Set for Showdown With Javelinas

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Friday night will feature an exciting matchup as the Western New Mexico University volleyball team will go against one of the hottest teams in the Lone Star Conference in Texas A&M-Kingsville, winners of six straight matches Friday night at 6 p.m.
 
WNMU (14-8, 6-5 LSC) rebounded from a tough 0-2 trip against the top two teams in the conference in Angelo State and Tarleton State, by defeating UT Permian Basin in a sweep Monday. The Lady Mustangs will put their perfect 15-15 set streak at home on the line, as they have yet to lose a set inside Drag's Court through the first five matches.
 
The Javelinas are 18-5 overall and 8-3 in the LSC and pulled off a big win at home against Tarleton State in five sets Tuesday night. They are 5-4 away from home in true road contests and 7-1 in neutral games. 
 
The Lady Mustangs are ranked in the top-three in the LSC in terms of aces per set (1.69), second in the conference and 63rd nationally, blocks per set (2.17), third and 32nd, hitting percentage (.236), third and 31st and team service aces (125), third and 64th. WNMU holds opponents to a .184 percentage and out-block teams by 45 tallying 160.5 as a team to 115.5 for the opposition.

Junior Melanie Hughes (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King Jr.) leads the team in aces per set at .40 and ranks her third in the conference and is fourth in total service aces (29). Senior Shannon Rich (Folsom, CA/Folsom) paces the team in blocks per set at 1.09 which puts her third in the conference and 43rd nationally. Rich has 81 blocks overall which places her fourth in the LSC and 37th nationally. Junior Samantha Haupeakui (San Mateo, CA/Aragon) has high block numbers for playing outside as she is sixth in the LSC in blocks per set a .96. Junior Ashley Mataele (Laie, HI/Kahuku) has led the team all season in digs and she ranks fourth in the conference in both total sigs (328) and digs per set (4.43). Junior Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow ) is hitting over .300 and leads the team with a .315 percentage which is good for fifth in the conference.

Other top numbers on the team include Verrill with 199 kills, Rich with 148, Haupeakui with 134, junior Morgan Lyneis (Victorville, CA/Apple Valley) with 123 and junior Kalie Lyle (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O' Connor ) with 117, all with over 100 kills. Hughes leads in assists with 372 and in blocks, three have at least 55 led by 81 from Rich, 67 from Haupeakui and 55 from Verrill.

It was a tough earlier meeting for WNMU when the two teams matched up back on Sep. 16 in Kingsville with the Javelinas taking the 3-0 victory. TAMUK is currently third in the LSC standings. They hit .229 as a team and hold teams to a .155 percentage. TAMUK has piled up 211.5 blocks and 153 service aces.

Krystal Faison leads the offense with 270 kills, but she isn't alone putting up strong numbers as Lexi Wick has 230 and Ashley Bukowski adds 206. Casey Klobedans runs the offense with 912 assists, while on defense Krystal Puente has 338 digs, Faison has 320 and Wick has 103 blocks.
