MSU Denver Erases Quick Start by Mustangs; Loucks Scores Career-High 26 Points

DENVER, Colo. – Junior Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) accounted for the first eight points scored by the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team Saturday to move out to an early lead. MSU Denver responded and never looked back going on to take the 100-60 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday.

Loucks opened the game with a layup 33 seconds in. He kept the momentum going with a three-pointer and later a three-point-play to move WNMU (1-19, 1-14 RMAC) to the 8-2 lead at the 16:52 mark. Loucks ended up setting a new career-high with 26 points going 11-17 from the field and also added seven rebounds.

MSU Denver (13-8, 11-4 RMAC) quickly came back to tie the game at nine and then a basket by DeShawn Phenix on the next trip down the floor for the Roadrunners gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Roadrunners took a 50-17 lead into halftime powered by a 16-4 edge on points in the paint and 21-3 points off the bench advantages.

The Mustangs shot much better in the second half hitting on 44 percent to put up 43 points. The Roadrunners held a 49-30 edge on rebounds and a 42-14 advantage on bench points for the game.

WNMU ended up shooting 31 percent (19-61) for the game, going 3-21 (14) from three-point range and 19-29 (66) at the foul line. MSU Denver hit on 34-63 (54), 9-20 (45) from three and 23-30 (77) at the foul line.

Senior Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) also went for double-figures scoring 12 points.

Phenix paced MSU Denver with 26 points as six Roadrunners scored in double-digits.

WNMU will return home this coming week when they will face Colorado Mesa on Friday night starting at 7:30 p.m.
