Mustangs Come up Just Short in Shootout at Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – In a game that featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes, the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team grabbed a late five-point lead before Adams State University stormed back to take the 94-88 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night.

The teams combined for 121 shot attempts and 61 free throw attempts. WNMU (1-17, 1-12 RMAC) tied a season-high with 10 three-pointers going 10-20 (50) from downtown. The Mustangs connected on a sizzling 27-58 (47) from the field, with five players scoring in double-figures led by Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver)'s 17 points, as he drilled 4-7 from long range.

ASU (8-10, 7-6 RMAC) got off to the early 6-2 lead and stayed in front until Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) hit a layup at the 14:09 mark to move WNMU ahead, 13-12.

The teams then alternated leads over the next several minutes before ASU moved ahead by five at 29-24 with 8:19 to go before halftime. Despite getting to within one on a three-pointer by Kesler, the Grizzlies would retain the lead the rest of the half taking a 53-44 advantage into the locker rooms.

After coming back to tie early in the second half, the Mustangs finally broke through to take the lead once again near the midway point of the half on a fastbreak layup by Kesler.

With the 11th tie of the game coming with 5:49 to play, WNMU went on a 5-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the night. Loucks started the run with a layup and then after a foul shot by Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ), Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) hit a layup for the 82-77 lead with 4:29 to play.

ASU worked their way back to tie the game for the 12th and final time with 2:26 to play at 85-all on a pair of free throws by Shakir Smith. Carter Aby (San Tan Valley, AZ/Combs) quickly changed momentum drilling a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor for the Mustangs to push them back ahead by three.

The Grizzlies finished strong after that scoring the final nine points to take the victory.

In addition to Kesler's big game, Aby scored a season-high 16 points and added seven rebounds. He went 3-4 from downtown. Range tallied 14 points, Loucks chipped in 12 and Enriquez collected 10 off the bench. Loucks just missed out on a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
