French’s Game-High 17 Points Paces Lady Mustangs at Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. – Senior My'Kale French (Racine, WI/Case ) poured in a season-high 17 points for the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team before Fort Lewis College got things going in the second half to pull away for the 92-68 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night.

French collected 11 points in the first half on her way to scoring her game-high 17 points. She went 5-14 from the field, including 3-5 from three-point range and 4-6 at the free throw line.

WNMU (6-11, 4-8 RMAC) took advantage on points in the paint (30-28), points off turnovers (16-7) and second chance points (16-11).

FLC (10-7, 6-6 RMAC) countered with a 56 percent (31-55) shooting effort from the floor and went 9-16 (56) from downtown. The bench also powered the Skyhawks as they outscored the Lady Mustangs, 54-20.

The Skyhawks opened on a 5-0 run before Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) and French answered with a WNMU 5-0 run to knot the game just over four minutes in.

Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) helped keep the deficit at just three near the end of the quarter when she converted a layup. From that point on FLC went on a 9-4 run to take a 21-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The Skyhawks pushed the lead into double-digits several times in the second quarter when the Lady Mustangs kept coming. Down by 13 with three minutes to go before the break, French helped trigger a quick 6-0 run with a jumper. After that, Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) took over with a layup and then a steal and fastbreak bucket left FLC in front by just seven, 35-28.

The Skyhawks outscored the Lady Mustangs by three the rest of the half to take a 41-30 lead into the locker rooms.

WNMU had a strong second quarter in several categories including 8-0 in both points in the paint and points off turnovers and held a 4-2 edge on fastbreak points.

To start the second half, French drilled a three-pointer to trim the deficit back to eight. That would end up being as close as WNMU could get the rest of the way with the Skyhawks closing the third quarter on a 23-12 run for the 64-45 lead after three.

Despite getting back to within 16 a few times in the fourth quarter, FLC wasn't to be denied as they went on to claim the victory.

Outside of French's season-high in points, Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) added 13 points, while Botelho tallied 10 points. Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) had a strong game off the bench going for eight points and a team-high eight rebounds in 19 minutes.

FLC was paced by Dallas Dickerson's 15 points off the bench. Alyssa Yocky added 11 points and Astrea Reed poured in 10. Sydni Brandon grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

WNMU shot just 34 percent (24-70) from the field, including a 3-11 effort (27) from three-point range. They went 17-24 (71) at the foul line. FLC went 21-31 (68) from the charity stripe.

WNMU will close the weekend at Adams State University tomorrow night beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Grizzlies dropped a tough game on a pair of late free throws against New Mexico Highlands, 51-49, earlier tonight.
