San Diego Holds on to Edge Football in Back-And-Forth Affair

Mitch Glasmann celebrates a touchdown pass against San Diego Saturday night.
Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Western New Mexico University football team held the lead in the third quarter and after the University of San Diego regained the lead, the Mustangs got to within three late before the Toreros recovered the onside kick to preserve the 38-35 victory Saturday evening.

University of San Diego (USD) opened the scoring six minutes in with a 55-yard run for the 7-0 lead. They would tack on a field goal a little over four minutes later for the 10-0 advantage.

It didn't take WNMU long to respond. After a one-yard run, quarterback Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) launched a pass downfield to the open wide receiver Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) who went into the end zone untouched for the 72-yard score and after sophomore Josh McIntire (El Cajon, CA/West Hills) made the extra point, it was a 10-7 USD lead near the end of the first quarter.

Before the opening quarter could end, USD (1-1) had another score left in them in the form of a 66-yard touchdown pass to open a 17-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

The teams traded possessions before WNMU got a big play from their special teams when wide receiver/returner Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) returned a 43-yard punt 43 yards himself back to where the punt originated giving the Mustangs great field position at the USD 20. Glasmann took little time marching WNMU in when he found sophomore Marcus Smith (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa HS) for 17 yards down to the three which Cleavon Barnes (Lancaster, CA/Lancaster ) finished when he ran up the middle for the rushing touchdown. The extra point was missed leaving WNMU behind by four, 17-13, with 7:25 to play before halftime.

The Toreros answered with a 12 play, 72-yard drive that chewed 5:38 off the clock and ended in a three-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 11, 24-13, with 1:47 to go in the first half.

That was plenty of time for the Mustangs to strike, as on third-and-15 from the WNMU 16, Glasmann connected with Pompey for 15 yards to just get the first down and keep the drive alive. After two incompletions, Glasmann hooked up with Byrd for 47 yards down to the USD 22. He would then find Pompey for nine more yards down to the 13 with 24 seconds left. After a WNMU timeout, Glasmann would find Larry Young for the 13-yard pitch-and-catch to leave the halftime score at 24-20 following McIntire's extra point.

WNMU claimed their first lead of the game midway through the third quarter. With USD out near midfield, a fumble at the USD 36 was recovered by Jerald Hines giving the Mustangs great field position. They would capitalize, as a third-and-seven was converted when Glasmann found Pompey for seven yards down to the 25. The next play found pay dirt when Byrd got free for a 25-yard pass from Glasmann. McIntire added the extra point to move the Mustangs in front, 27-24, with 7:23 to play in the third.

USD came back with another lengthy drive to regain the lead. They converted three third downs, one via a pass interference and would later score a touchdown on a four-yard pass to cap a 12 play, 83-yard drive that chewed 5:27 off the clock and gave USD a 31-27 lead.

The fourth quarter began with USD again on the move, but a couple of big defensive plays near the WNMU 30 would lead to a turnover on downs.

After a WNMU three-and-out, the defense again came through with a big stop on downs. With the Toreros looking at a fourth-and-one at the WNMU 20, they elected to run the ball when Cody Hawkins (Show Low, AZ/Show Low) was waiting to deliver the three-yard tackle for loss and give the ball back to the offense with still 7:38 to play in the game.

Again, USD was up to the challenge on defense, giving up a first down run to Abe Macias before forcing a punt.

This time USD was able to break through thanks to a 31-yard scamper that moved the lead to 38-27 with 2:24 left to play.

The Mustangs kept fighting, as they were quickly faced with a fourth-and-15 at their 21. Having to go for it, Glasmann stepped up and found a wide open Pompey for 65 yards down to the USD 4 following a 10-yard face mask penalty. WNMU wasted little time scoring when Glasmann hit Byrd for the four-yard score leaving WNMU behind by four, 38-33, with 50 seconds to play. Needing to try and get to within a field goal of tying the game, the Mustangs went for two and Glasmann hit Pompey leaving WNMU down just three at 38-35.

That left a subsequent onside kick with the game on the line and USD was able to recover the kick ending the game following a pair of kneel downs.

USD outgained WNMU, 583 to 394, holding a 270 to 43 edge on the ground. WNMU held a 351 to 313 edge through the air. Macias led the Mustangs on the ground with 35 yards on 10 carries. Glasmann completed 20-of-32 for 351 yards and four touchdowns with a long of 72. Pompey had a huge game, hauling in eight passes for 193 yards and one score. Byrd had 103 yards on six catches and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Adrian Lopez (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Garden Grove ) in his first game as a Mustang led the team in tackles with 10, including eight solo. Hines and Brandon Perkins (Tucson, AZ/Desert View ) had six apiece, while Hines had three tackles for loss and a sack.

WNMU will now have a bye week before opening RMAC play at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, Sep. 21 at 2 p.m. CSU-Pueblo defeated Division 1 (FCS) Northern Colorado, 41-36, Saturday.
