Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team went on a 9-0 run late in the second half when the Colorado School of Mines countered the run to hold off the Lady Mustangs and come away with the 69-57 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night.
Western New Mexico University (WNMU) held a pair of early two-point leads in the opening stanza. A 4-0 run behind a jump shot from
Jelesia Gray (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena High School) and layup by
Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School) gave the Lady Mustangs a 4-2 lead at the 17:29 mark.
Later, a
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) three put WNMU (4-21, 3-18 RMAC) back in front, 7-5, two minutes later.
Colorado School of Mines (CSM) engineered a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to open a 21-9 lead at the midway point of the half.
Veronica Celaya (Chandler, AZ/Williams Field High School) tallied a 5-0 run near the end of the first half, hitting two from the foul line and a three-pointer to help bring WNMU within 13, 29-16.
CSM (15-12, 12-9 RMAC) outscored WNMU by three the rest of the half to take a 36-20 lead into the locker room.
Hamilton brought the Lady Mustangs as close as 14 early in the second half when she posted a layup nearly three minutes in leaving CSM ahead, 36-22.
The Orediggers went on a 8-0 run and would keep the lead in the 20's until
Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) drilled a jumper at the 8:50 mark to bring WNMU to within 18, 52-34.
Scott would continue her hot shooting, as she delivered two from the free throw line and later hit one from downtown to leave the Lady Mustangs behind by 15, 54-39.
Wohltman added to the comeback with two from the charity stripe giving the Lady Mustangs a 7-0 run.
The run would reach 9-0 on a jump shot from Gray to trim the deficit to 11, 54-43, at the 5:53 mark.
After CSM stopped the run, WNMU would get as close as 10 with 1:16 left on a layup from Hamilton. The Orediggers answered with the next six points to go on to the victory.
Wohltman led all scorers going for a season-high 25 points, along with four rebounds. Gray also reached double-figures, going for a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. CSM was led by 15 from Angie Charchalis.
Both teams struggled from the field, with CSM hitting on 21-of-64 (32.8), while WNMU made 22-of-68 (32.4). CSM held a 9-5 edge in three-pointers and an 18-8 advantage in free throws.
WNMU will close the regular season this coming Saturday at home against in-state rival New Mexico Highlands beginning at 1 p.m. inside Drag's Court. It will also be senior day for the five WNMU seniors,
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School),
Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School),
Jelesia Gray (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena High School),
Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School) and
Sasha Montez (Waianae, HI/Nanakuli High School), as they will be honored after the game.
