Mountain Lions Defeat Women's Basketball

Kassie Scott recorded a double-double going for 11 points and 10 rebounds Friday night.
Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team fought back early on, but the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs had too much Friday night as they went on to the 77-56 victory in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS) opened the game with the first four points, which Western New Mexico University (WNMU) countered with the next three with Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School) hitting a layup and the ensuing foul shot to trim the deficit to one three minutes in.

UCCS (14-4, 11-3 RMAC) caught fire over the next four minutes as they went on a 14-0 run to open an 18-3 lead.

WNMU (3-15, 2-12 RMAC) turned around and reeled off a 7-0 run to get back within eight at 18-10 thanks to a three from Kim Clark (Santee, CA/West Hills High School) and then jumpers from Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) and Desiree Young (North Ogden, UT/Weber High School).

That would be as close as the Lady Mustangs would get the rest of the first half with the Mountain Lions taking a 38-20 lead into the locker room.

UCCS would push the lead into the 20's a few minutes into the second stanza and WNMU would get the deficit as low as 17 a couple of times with the last one coming with 8:18 to play on a free throw from Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School), 59-42.

It would remain at about that spread the rest of the way with UCCS going on to the 21-point win.

Scott led the way for WNMU with 11 points, while also collecting a double-double with 10 rebounds. Young added 10 points as she started at point guard. Three Lady Mustangs chipped in with nine apiece (Hamilton, Jelesia Gray (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena High School) and Wohltman).

UCCS was paced by a game-high 13 from Lauren Wolfinger off the bench.

UCCS shot 42.2 percent from the field (27-64), while WNMU was just under 30 percent (18-62). WNMU made one more three-pointer (7-6) and UCCS held a 17-to-13 edge at the charity stripe.

WNMU will play at CSU-Pueblo Saturday night beginning at 5:30 p.m.
