SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will look to continue their solid start to the season this weekend when they host a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams in Colorado Mesa University and Western State Colorado University.
WNMU (4-3, 1-1 RMAC) is coming off of a dominating 95-67 win over Colorado Christian and have won all three games at home this season over Sul Ross State (105-55), University of the Southwest (89-59) and Angelo State (59-52).
A trio of juniors lead the team in scoring with
Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) pouring in 15.9 per game,
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) with 12.4 per contest and
Stephanie Moore (Anton, TX/Anton High School) at 10.4 a game. Mitchell leads the team in three-pointers made (22), while Newsome leads in steals with 17 and assists with 33. Moore and fellow junior
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) are each shooting over 50 percent from the floor with Moore connecting on 29-of-52 (55.8) and Hernandez making 20-of-33 (60.6). Hernandez also leads the team in rebounds at 8.3 per game.
They will open the week on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. against No. 5 Colorado Mesa University. The Mavericks are 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the RMAC. Sharaya Selsor by far leads the team scoring 25.7 per night, as the team averages 79.8 as a whole. Aubry Boehme is also in double-figures at 12.3 per night. This past weekend they rolled up wins over Chadron State (86-41) and Black Hills State (81-52).
Colorado Mesa took both matchups last year winning in Grand Junction (63-50) and in Silver City (77-61) later in the year.
The following night on Saturday also at 5:30 p.m. Western State will come to town after playing at New Mexico Highlands on Friday.
WSCU (2-5, 2-0 RMAC) won a pair of tight games at home this past weekend by a combined three points. The defeated Black Hills State (48-47) and then edged Chadron State (79-77). Jade McIntosh leads the team in scoring at 15.1 per game and Desiree Smith adds another 12 points per contest. The teams played a pair of close games last year with the Mountaineers pulling out both. First winning in Gunnison (59-50) and then in Silver City (58-57).
WNMU will also partner with Toys For Tots both nights. By donating a new/unopened toy, the first 50 fans will receive a free drink and admission.
