ANGELO, Tex. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team hits the road this week to compete in the San Angelo Community Medical Center Classic powered by Foster Communications against Abilene Christian University and Angelo State University.
First up will be Division I Abilene Christian, as the Wildcats made the move from Division II to I this season and are a part of the Southland Conference. ACU is 0-5 having faced Duquesne (94-75), St. Bonaventure (75-47), Maryland (67-44), Iowa (103-41) and most recently on Nov. 19 against Texas Christian (71-64). Harrison Hawkins leads the team averaging 12.8 points per contest. LaDarrien Williams is also in double-figures at 10 per game. Austin Cooke leads the team in rebounds at 7.2 per game and also puts in 8.8 points per game. ACU and WNMU will play at 5 p.m. (Central) Friday night.
On Saturday, the Mustangs will battle the host school in Angelo State. The Rams will face Northern New Mexico on Friday before playing WNMU. ASU is 4-0 entering this weekend with wins over East Central (72-62), Southwestern Oklahoma (67-65), Arlington Baptist (78-49) and York College (96-85). Kenny Williams, Daniel Skinner and Bryan Hammond all average in double-figures in scoring led by 21 a game from Williams, 13.5 from Skinner and 11 from Hammond. Williams also leads the team in rebounds at 7.3 per contest. ASU and WNMU will tip at 7 p.m. (Central) Saturday night.
WNMU (0-1) last played on Nov. 16 in an exhibition at Grand Canyon with the Lopes winning, 91-41. The last regular season game took place on Nov. 14 at Northern New Mexico with the Eagles taking the 75-62 victory. In that game,
Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) led the way with 17 points and four rebounds. He also had two steals.
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) and
CJ Grigg (Reno, NV/) scored in double-digits with Loucks going for 12 and Grigg with 10.
