Volleyball Rolls Past Mountaineers; Will Face Metro State Tuesday in RMAC Tournament

Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University volleyball team extended their home winning streak to seven and overall streak to six with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-11) victory over Western State Colorado University Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Drag's Court.


The first set was controlled by the Lady Mustangs (23-5, 15-4 RMAC) throughout as they quickly went in front 10-4 on an attack error. Later, another attack error jumped the lead to 10 at 16-6 and the momentum continued with WNMU as they closed out the set with the final two points with Seluia "Ria" Falealili posting a kill and then solo block for a 25-10 set win.


WSCU (1-26, 0-19 RMAC) came out strong in the second set as they moved in front 7-3. WSCU would continue to lead at 16-15 when the Lady Mustangs answered back with kills from Bobbi Bayer (Granby, CO/Eddyville Blakesburg ) and Kaysee Pilgrim (Phoenix, AZ/Barry Goldwater) for a 17-16 lead. WNMU would go in front by four at 22-18 on a kill by Angelina Pulu (Long Beach, CA/Robert A. Millikan High School) and after WSCU was back to within three at 23-20, Bayer had a kill and an attack error gave WNMU the 25-20 set win and 2-0 match lead.


WNMU started early in the third pushing in front 12-6 with Shannon Rich (Folsom, CA/Folsom) and Bayer tallying kills to end the stretch. The lead reached 10 at 17-7 on a kill by Pulu. With the Lady Mustangs still ahead by 10, 20-10, a 4-0 run put WNMU one-point away with Lauren Buseman (Eagar, AZ/Round Valley) and Pilgrim combining for a double-block and after a Mountaineer error, Pilgrim and Bayer posted kills. WSCU would record the next point on a service error before Bayer ended the match in style with a solid kill for the 25-11 set win and 3-0 match victory.


Pulu led the offensive attack with 15 kills to just six errors in 31 chances (.290). Rich and Bayer added nine kills apiece. Pilgrim also had eight. Alyssa Meihack (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) dished out 39 assists. On defense, Meihack had 16 digs, while Pulu and Kassie Kagawa (Hilo, HI/Waiakea High School) added 10 each. Falealili again was all over the net with four total blocks, three solo.


The six WNMU seniors were honored after the match in Pulu, Bayer, Meihack, Falealili, Reyna Acosta (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) and Kagawa.


WNMU, the two seed in the RMAC, will host the seventh seed Metro State, as the Roadrunners will enter with a 17-10 overall mark and 13-6 in the RMAC. Five teams ended up tied for third at 13-6, as Colorado Mesa earned the three seed and will host sixth seed Colorado Christian. Adams State as the fourth seed will host the fifth seed in Regis and top seed Colorado Mines will host the eighth seed in Fort Lewis. All matches will be played on Tuesday at seven, except for the match at Adams State that will start at eight. The top remaining seed will host the final four that will take place Friday and Saturday.
