Women's Basketball Preps For Home Opener Against Sul Ross State

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's team will host Sul Ross State University in their home opener Saturday at 4:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.

The Lady Mustangs (0-2) are coming off a trip to Alaska in which they lost to Alaska Fairbanks (87-72) and Alaska Anchorage (85-56). This will be the first of two straight at home with a game against the University of the Southwest set for Monday at 6 p.m.

RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) has already made a solid impact for WNMU as she is averaging 15 points per game in her first two games as a Lady Mustang to lead the team. She also leads the team in assists with six and is tied for the lead in steals with four while playing a team-high 31.5 minutes per game. Fellow newcomers Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) and Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) are averaging 10 points apiece. Veronica Celaya (Chandler, AZ/Williams Field High School) leads the team in rebounds pulling down an average of 8.5 per contest.

Sul Ross State has yet to play a game this season, only a pair of scrimmages and a match against their alumni. They went 1-24 a season ago and faced just one Division II opponent in Texas-Permian Basin to start the season falling, 105-41.

The Lobos have just one senior in Asrelle Anderson, two juniors, two sophomores and 10 freshmen on the roster.
