SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University football team will face the third team on their schedule this season that has either been ranked or receiving votes in the national polls when they host Chadron State College Saturday afternoon at Altamirano Field.
The Eagles (6-2, 5-1 RMAC) are receiving 11 votes in the American Football Coaches Association Poll, having been ranked in the top-25 earlier this year. They are also ranked seventh in the Super Region Four Rankings, as the top six teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs from the region.
Chadron State has won their last two following a 51-42 home loss to CSU-Pueblo. Since then they have rolled off wins over Black Hills State (43-13) and New Mexico Highlands (31-24). The only other loss came against West Texas A&M (34-31).
Glen Clinton is one of the top running backs in the RMAC as the senior has tallied 1,121 yards on 182 attempts with 13 touchdowns on the ground. He also has 36 grabs for 372 yards. Junior quarterback Jonn McLain has thrown for 2,084 yards, completing 201-of-308 with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Cody Roes leads the team in receptions and touchdowns with 40 catches for 448 yards and nine scores.
On defense, Shea Koch far and away leads the team in tackles racking up 98, with 43 solo. The next closest on the team has 55. Koch also has 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack and a quarterback hurry.
Chadron State defeated WNMU last season in Chadron, 41-23, and last time in Silver in 2011, 21-13. WNMU comes into the game 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC and are 2-0 at home.
WNMU defeated Western State in their last home game on Oct. 19 over Western State, 42-34 and lost on the road last week at Adams State, 41-20.
Senior running back Abe Macias leads the rushing attack having compiled 528 yards on 125 rushes with two touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) has completed 150-of-286 passes for 2,092 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions. Senior wide receiver
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) ranks fourth nationally in receiving yards per game pilling up an average of 132.7. Overall, he leads the team in receptions with 47, yards with 929 and in touchdowns with eight. Junior
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) has added 40 catches for 456 yards and three touchdowns.
On the defensive end, senior
Jerrald Hines (Los Angeles, CA/) leads the team in tackles with 44, including 23 solo. He also has six tackles for loss, two sacks and both a fumble forced and recovered. Junior Deshawn Hathorne has both interceptions, while junior
Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) and senior
Dante Sellers (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley HS) have two sacks apiece.
Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
