ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team will look to carry their momentum following a home win over Western State when they play at Adams State University in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday at Rex Stadium.
ASU (5-2, 3-2 RMAC) has won their last two with victories against Black Hills State (49-43) and New Mexico Highlands (24-20). Both losses came against the top two teams in the RMAC in CSU-Pueblo and Chadron State. The Grizzlies defeated WNMU last season, 49-28. ASU has won the last five meetings with WNMU last winning in 2007 coming away with a 16-14 win in Alamosa.
ASU is led on the ground by Justin Kauffman who has 240 yards and one touchdown. Four others have rushed for at least 100 yards. Auston Hillman has passed for 784 yards and three touchdowns. Taylor Schmidt has brought down most of the yardage going for 307 yards on 27 receptions with two touchdowns. On defense, Vince Coach has 49 tackles, 32 solo.
The Mustangs (2-4, 2-3 RMAC) won a shootout against Western State this past Saturday, 42-34. Abe Macias has taken over as the main back for WNMU having rushed for 466 yards on 106 carries and two touchdowns.
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) has completed 131-of-237 for 1,838 yards and 17 touchdowns. Two receivers have over 30 catches led by 39 from
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) who also leads the team in receiving yards with 859 and seven scores.
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) has 35 grabs for 356 yards and three touchdowns.
Brent Courtney (Oceanside CA/Carlsbad HS) and Larry Young have also caught three touchdown passes. Pompey is second in the nation in receiving yards per game at 143.2, trailing the national leader by less than 10 yards per contest.
Defensively,
Jerrald Hines (Los Angeles, CA/) has 38 tackles, followed by 34 from
Nicholas Cook (Winnetka, CA/Bishop Alemany HS). Hines also has five tackles for loss, two sacks, forced fumble, fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Deshawn Hathorne leads the team in interceptions with two.
