Volleyball Flies Past Eagles For Sixth Straight Win

Angelina Pulu led the offense with 16 kills Friday night.
Box Score CHADRON, Neb. – Make it six straight for the Western New Mexico University volleyball team as they rolled to another sweep this time over Chadron State (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.


With the sweep, the Lady Mustangs (15-3, 8-2 RMAC) have now won 15 straight sets and three straight wins on the road.


In the opening set, WNMU jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after Chadron State (3-15, 0-9 RMAC) started the match with a kill. The Eagles would come back to tie the set at 11. Seven more ties would take place with the last coming at 19 when WNMU reeled off the next four points to open a 23-19 lead. Angelina Pulu (Long Beach, CA/Robert A. Millikan High School) and Shannon Rich (Folsom, CA/Folsom) posted kills along with two errors by the Eagles. The teams would split the next two points before Seluia "Ria" Falealili (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) closed the set with a kill for the 25-20 victory.


The second set had the Lady Mustangs again jump out early, pushing out to a 10-4 lead with Chyler Imai (Kapaau, HI/Kohala) tallying a service ace and a kill from Kaysee Pilgrim (Phoenix, AZ/Barry Goldwater) to close the run and force an Eagle timeout. The lead would reach eight at 16-8 on a kill by Falealili. CSC didn't go away, as they came back to within three at 23-20 forcing a WNMU timeout. Out of the break, Pulu pounded a kill and after a point by the Eagles, Bobbi Bayer (Granby, CO/Eddyville Blakesburg ) closed the set with a kill of her own for the 25-21 set win and 2-0 match lead.


The third set was close early on, with the teams tying a couple of times with the last coming at nine. A 4-0 run followed for the Lady Mustangs as they benefited from two Eagle errors and a pair of kills from Bayer. The lead reached eight at 20-12 following a CSC attack error. The Eagles would make one last run, as they got to within two a couple of times with the last coming at 23-21 before WNMU closed the set with a kill by Bayer for the 25-22 set win and 3-0 match victory.


Pulu had a monster game on offense leading the way with 16 kills, while Bayer added 11. Alyssa Meihack (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) tallied 35 assists, while on defense, Keirsa Pakani-Tsukiyama (Hilo, HI/Waiakea) had 10 digs and Rich had four total blocks, with one solo.


WNMU will face Black Hills State Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. in Spearfish, S.D.
