Football Travels to Grand Junction For Matchup With Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team hits the road this Saturday to play at Colorado Mesa University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.


CMU (3-2, 2-1 RMAC) comes off of wins in their previous two games over New Mexico Highlands (22-17) and Black Hills State (49-11). They opened the season with a 34-0 win over Menlo and then lost a pair of games to two tough teams in Division I (FCS) Montana State (26-0) and Chadron State (30-24).


Jake Cimolino leads the rushing attack having chewed up 492 yards on 95 carries and five touchdowns. In the passing game, Kyle Duran has thrown for 518 yards and one touchdown, while Jason Haferman has four touchdown passes and 299 yards. DJ Hubbard leads the team in receiving with 16 catches for 152 yards and two scores. On defense, Jake Edmiston has far and away led the team with 66 tackles, which includes 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions. Andrew Hurley is next on the list with 37 stops, six tackles for loss and two sacks.


Colorado Mesa is 24-9 against the Mustangs in the overall series, having won four of the last five meetings against WNMU in Grand Junction. WNMU won the last matchup in 2011 coming away with a 33-21 victory. Last season, the Mavericks won in Silver City, 31-14.


The Mustangs (3-1, 1-2 RMAC) are coming off of an impressive Homecoming win over Colorado Mines last week, 25-22. Abe Macias leads the rushing attack going for 223 yards on 55 carries and one touchdown. Cleavon Barnes (Lancaster, CA/Lancaster ) and Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) have the other two rushing touchdowns. In the air, Glasmann has thrown for 1,107 yards, completing 83-of-150 with 10 touchdowns. Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) has caught 28 of the passes for 282 yards and three scores, while Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) also has three scores to go along with 552 yards on 24 receptions.


On defense, Nicholas Cook (Winnetka, CA/Bishop Alemany HS) and Jerrald Hines (Los Angeles, CA/) lead the team in total tackles with each accounting for 25. Hines also has three tackles for loss, one sack, one pass breakup and a fumble recovery along with a quarterback hurry. Dante Sellers (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley HS) leads the team in both tackles for loss with four and sacks with two.


WNMU and Colorado Mesa will square off Saturday afternoon with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
