ANCHORAGE, Alaska/SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Fans will be able to follow both the Western New Mexico University football and volleyball teams this weekend.
The WNMU football team will look to build off of their 55-45 victory against Sul Ross State last week when they play at the University of San Diego, a Division I school. USD lost last week against Cal Poly Pomona, 41-14. Last season, the Toreros scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter on their way to a 30-10 victory. The numbers were pretty close, with USD outgaining WNMU, 392-355 in total yardage, while the Mustangs held the edge in the passing game, 241-221. Returning receivers
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS),
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) and
Shamone Fletcher (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa HS) all had big games last year. Sumpter tallied seven c atches for 68 yards, Pompey four grabs for 58 and Fletcher two receptions for 69. Defensively, returning defensive back Bernard Williams was tied for second in tackles with six.
USD and WNMU will battle at 7 p.m. Mountain Time Saturday evening. Live video, audio and stats will be available for the game.

As for the Lady Mustangs, they are in Alaska for the next few days where they will face Adelphi (N.Y.) and Dixie State (Utah) today, before playing host Alaska-Anchorage Saturday. Adelphi won three of their four games in the Millersville Tournament to open the season defeating Slippery Rock, Holy Family and LIU Post. Their only loss was to Shippensburg. Dixie State has yet to play any games and they will open against the host Sea Wolves today before playing WNMU later tonight. Alaska-Anchorage is 1-3 on the season entering the tournament, having defeated Academy of the Art, and falling to Minnesota State, San Francisco State and Cal-State Monterey Bay.
