Lonnie Sanchez (Scottsdale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) added nine points as the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team held a two-point halftime lead before Regis stormed back to defeat the Mustangs, 81-62, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) started the night strong for WNMU (0-24, 0-21 RMAC) as she recorded the first points of the game on a three-pointer.
Regis (11-16, 9-12 RMAC) came back to open a three-point lead and one they would get as high as 12 at the 4:24 mark.
The Mustangs came roaring back in a big way, with Tucker hitting a pair of threes to cut the deficit to six. After RU scored a layup, Sanchez answered with a layup and then Tucker drilled two more three-pointers to tie the game at 29.
Larissa Loera (Mira Loma, CA/Jurupa Valley High School) gave WNMU a lead at halftime as she took a pass from
Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) off the fastbreak and hit the jumper for a 31-29 lead at halftime.
WNMU opened the second half just like the first half with Wohltman hitting a three-pointer 45 seconds in for a 34-29 lead.
The Mustangs would hold a five-point lead for the last time at 18:36 mark on a layup by
Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School).
The Rangers came back with a hug run a 16-0 run over the next four minutes to turn a five-point deficit into an 11-point lead, 47-36.
A Hamilton free throw with 13:44 left cut the deficit to eight, 47-39, but that would be as close as WNMU would get the rest of the way with Regis pulling away for the victory.
Tucker led the Mustangs with 19 points on her senior night, along with seven assists. She hit four three-pointers. Wohltman added 11, along with nine from Sanchez on her senior night.
Regis' Kari Ameling led all-scorers with 23 points.
WNMU will close the 2011-12 season at New Mexico Highlands next Saturday night with tipoff set for 6 p.m.
