Women's Basketball Stays Close in First Half Before Falling to Western State

Lonnie Sanchez came off the bench to lead the Mustangs with 15 points.
Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team stayed with Western State College throughout the first half before falling to the Mountaineers, 92-59, Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

WNMU (0-21, 0-18 RMAC) took an early one-point lead 1:27 in on a three-pointer by Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School), before WSC (12-12, 11-7 RMAC) responded with 6-0 run and never looked back.

The Mustangs made a run midway through the first half, as the Mountaineers pushed the lead to 10, 20-10, which was countered by a three from Lonnie Sanchez (Scottsdale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) and another by Larissa Loera (Mira Loma, CA/Jurupa Valley High School) to trim the deficit to four.

That would be as close as WNMU would get the rest of the first half as WSC took a 44-33 lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the second half on a jumper by Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School) to trim the WSC lead to nine, 44-35, before the Mountaineers ripped off a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.

WNMU was paced by 15 from Sanchez off the bench, along with 13 from Wohltman. Sasha Montez (Waianae, HI/Nanakuli High School) and Hamilton were close to double-digits, scoring nine points each.

WSC's Jake Braddy led all-scorers with 25 points, while also tallying a double-double with 14 rebounds.

WNMU will remain on the road on Saturday as they will play at Colorado Mesa University with gametime set for 6 p.m.
