Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team led by four at the half and held the lead until just under the midway point of the second half when Western State Colorado University used a 10-0 run to edge out the Lady Mustangs, 59-50, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Paul Wright Gym.
Western New Mexico University (WNMU) closed the first half strong, as after Western State Colorado University (WSCU) came back to tie the game at 34, WNMU (1-7, 0-4 RMAC) reeled off the next four points to close the half.
Desiree Young (North Ogden, UT/Weber High School) started the run with a layup on the fastbreak, which
Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) added to that a jumper after she collected the offensive rebound leaving WNMU ahead, 38-34, at the break.
WSCU (1-7, 1-3 RMAC) used a 4-0 spurt to start the second half and tie the game at 38 with just over a minute off the clock.
The Lady Mustangs posted the next basket on a layup by
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) to push WNMU back in front. Wohltman struck again a little later on a jumper for a 42-38 lead at the 15:50 mark. Wohltman continued her hot shooting for the Lady Mustangs, stroking a trey three minutes later to give WNMU their largest lead of the second half of six, 45-39.
Wohltman kept WNMU in front by three on a jumper at the 8:48 mark giving WNMU the 47-44 lead.
The Mountaineers responded in a big way from that point on. They would tally a three two minutes later to tie the game and would add seven more points for a 10-0 run over the course of three minutes to take a 54-47 lead with just 3:44 to play.
WNMU looked to battle back, with Scott ending the run with a jumper 30 seconds later. But, WSCU had an answer, drilling a three on their next possession to push the lead to eight on their way to taking the 59-50 victory.
WSCU opened the game with a 5-1 lead, which WNMU would answer with a three from
Kim Clark (Santee, CA/West Hills High School) and later Clark struck again with another deep ball to give the Lady Mustangs their first lead of the game of 7-6 three minutes in.
Wohltman would start WNMU on an 8-0 run with a three at the 16:49 mark. Wohltman would add a jumper in the paint in front of a jumper by Scott that gave WNMU a 14-8 lead at the 15:26 mark.
The lead would get as high as seven, WNMU's largest of the night, two minutes later following a pair of free throws from
Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School), 17-10.
WSCU came back with a 9-0 run to take a 19-17 lead near the midway point of the opening half.
Scott helped provide another spark for a long run for the Lady Mustangs on the ensuing possession with a trey, which WNMU added to that a three and a jumper both by Wohltman for an 8-0 run and a 25-19 lead with nine minutes to go before halftime.
WNMU would keep the lead throughout most of the first half, pushing the lead back to six at 30-24 on a free throw by Hamilton with five minutes left in the half. The Lady Mustangs would hold the lead until WSCU came back to tie at 34 when WNMU closed strong with a 4-0 run.
WNMU held the advantage in rebounds (40-30). WNMU shot 34 percent (18-53) from the field to a 43.8 effort (21-48) for WSCU. WSCU hit two more three-pointers (8-6) and one more free throw (9-8).
Wohltman tied for the game-high in points with 19. Clark added 11, including two three-pointers, while Scott added 10 points. Hamilton led the team in rebounds with nine, to go along with six points.
WSCU's Desiree Smith tied for the high in points and led the Mountaineers with 19.
WNMU will return home this coming week as they will host CSU-Pueblo Friday evening with game time set for 5:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court. Metro State defeated CSU-Pueblo, 54-43, Saturday night.
