The Mustangs captured a huge win against Fort Lewis Friday night. The Skyhawks came into the contest with a 15-3 record and just smashed the Mustangs in their first meeting of the season (103-61), but WNMU didn't let that bother them. They hit the hardwood hard and netted their first and only overtime game this season, 93-88.
WNMU is now 10-13 on the season and 10-6 in the RMAC. The win makes the conference standings a bit tighter. WNMU currently sits in sixth but is right behind Adams State (10-5) and New Mexico Highlands (11-5). The top four teams host the first round of the conference playoffs.
The Mustangs were down by 11 midway through the first half, 21-10, after Fort Lewis went on 10-0 run over a two-minute period. WNMU eventually put a rally together of their own, 20-6, beginning at the 6:20 mark to close out the half. WNMU walked into the locker room with a 38-33 lead.
WNMU held the lead with 13:18 on the clock in the second, but back-to-back threes pushed the Skyhawks ahead for the next 11 minutes.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) finally tied the game for the fifth time (73-73) with 1:33 left in regulation when he sank a three. Fort Lewis was forced to call the timeout. Riley finished the night with 17 points.
Right after the time out,
Jeron McIntosh (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) played stellar defense and snagged the inbounds ball. He went in for the easy deuce. That wasn't the last of McIntosh. He forced another Skyhawk turnover on the next inbounds pass. He wouldn't capitalize with any points this time around, but he did hold off Fort Lewis for the next 16 seconds.
Fort Lewis tied up the game at 75 with a runaway jumper with 31 showing on the clock. The Mustangs tried to go for the last shot but missed two to force the overtime.
It was all WNMU in the extra minutes. WNMU went 5 for 7 from the floor, 1 for 1 from the arc, and 7 for 8 from the free throw line. Fort Lewis couldn't compare.
McIntosh finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. He went 11 for 13 from the free throw line.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) led all scorers with 25 points. He was one rebound shy of a double-double.
