The score was knotted at 30 going into intermission Saturday night in the heated battle featuring New Mexico Highlands and WNMU. It was WNMU that put together a better second half to earn the win, 93-83.
WNMU is now 14-15 on the season with a solid 14-8 conference record. Highlands is 19-7 overall (15-7 RMAC). The two teams must now wait until all of tonight's scores are reported to see who they will face in the first round of the RMAC tournament.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) led all scorers with 29 points. He was 12 for 21 from the floor. He also had six rebounds and three blocks.
Chuck Kempf (Chicago, IL, Lakes High School, Trinidad Junior College) and
Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM, Las Cruces High School) both had 14 points. Twelve of Luttrell's points were from the free throw line.
In total, WNMU shot 52 free throws and was .769 from the line. Highlands attempted 42 and made 26 (.619).
The Cowboys were much stronger on the boards. They outrebounded the Mustangs, 54-40. Twenty-six of the Highland rebounds were on the offensive end, resulting in 25 points.
Highlands was led by Thomas Manzano who had 27 points and 15 rebounds.
