Box Score SILVER CITY, NM -- The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team kept it close throughout the first half and made another run in the second half before falling to Colorado Mesa, 88-71, Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Drag's Court.

 
After the teams tied for the third time early on at the 18:59 mark, CMU (5-2, 3-0 RMAC) raced out to a
21-12 lead thanks to a 13-4 run.
 

Down by seven near the midway point of the first half, WNMU (0-6, 0-3 RMAC) began to make a comeback. Kim Clark (Santee, CA/West Hills High School) came through with a three-pointer, which Lonnie Sanchez (Scottsdale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) added to that a jumper and after Amanda Tucker (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield High School) nailed a pull-up three, the Mustangs were in front, 29-27, with eight minutes to play before halftime.
 

The Mavericks, though, pushed back to turn the deficit into a seven-point lead at the 3:57 mark and
would hold an eight-point lead, 47-39, at the break.
 

The Mustangs made a couple of comebacks in the second half, but each time CMU had an answer.
 

With the lead as high as 14 five minutes in, WNMU began to chip away with Heather Hamilton (Ely, NV/White Pine High School) hitting
a free throw, followed by a pair of layups from Jelesia Gray (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena High School) to shrink the deficit to nine, 63-54.
 

After CMU countered with a three, Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) answered with a catch-and-release trey to cut the lead back to eight with 12 minutes to play.
 

The Mustangs once again would cut the lead back down to eight later in the half, as trailing by 14
nine minutes to play, Wohltman began WNMU on the comeback trail with a three-pointer.
 

Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) followed that with a three of her own on the next trip down the floor to make it an eight-point spread again, 74-66, with 7:31 to play.
 

That would be as close as the Mustangs would be able to get the rest of the way, as CMU came back with a quick 7-0 run to push the lead to 15 with five minutes to play and never looked back.
 

Gray tied for the game-high in points with 19, as she made 5-of-7 from the field, along with 9-of-10 from the line. She also had five rebounds.
 

Wohltman tallied 17, including five three-pointers and Scott rounded out the group in double-digits with 12.
 

WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will face Western State Saturday night with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.
