Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The No.3 ranked Metro State Roadrunners were not to be denied against the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team as Metro downed the Mustangs, 109-47, Saturday night inside the Auraria Event Center in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
MSC (6-0, 2-0 RMAC) scored early and often, posting a three-pointer 20 seconds in and opened a 9-0 lead over the first three-plus minutes before WNMU (0-5, 0-2 RMAC) got on the board with a three of their own from
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School).
After falling behind by eight on the next possession, the Mustangs reeled off five points, with
Amanda Tucker (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield High School) connecting on a trey, which
Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) followed with a layup making it an 11-8 game at the 13:46 mark.
A 7-0 run by Metro over the next few minutes pushed the lead into double-digits at 18-8 midway through the first half.
The Roadrunners continued the pressure, pushing the ball throughout the game and closed the half on a 13-0 run to take a 57-21 lead into the locker room.
A layup by
Jelesia Gray (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena High School) just over five minutes into the second half trimmed the deficit back to 35, 67-32, but that would be as close as the Mustangs would be able to get the rest of the way.
Scott was the only Mustang in double-digits with 11 points, while
Kim Clark (Santee, CA/West Hills High School) added nine and Wohltman with eight.
Metro St. shot over 61 percent (44-72) from the field, while the Mustangs were held to just over 28 percent (16-57).
WNMU will return home for their next contest when they will host Colorado Mesa on Friday night with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.
