No. 3 Metro State Powers Past Men's Basketball

Brelan Berry led the Mustangs with 14 points Saturday night against Metro State.
Box Score DENVER, Colo. – No. 3 Metro State led throughout on their way to defeating the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team, 85-57, Saturday night at the Auraria Event Center in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) and Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) tallied early baskets for WNMU (1-4, 1-1 RMAC) to get the Mustangs within two both times early in the first half, before MSC (7-0, 2-0 RMAC) went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to open a 14-4 lead at the 15:08 mark of the first half.

The Roadrunners would push the lead into the 20's and after Everett Duis (El Paso, TX/El Dorado High School) knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 17, 33-16, MSC would control the rest of the first half adding 10 more points to their lead to take a 50-23 lead into the locker room.

MSC kept the pressure on early in the second half, keeping the lead around 30-40, before the Mustangs made a rally midway through the second half.

Down 40, 78-38, Luttrell got loose for a three, which Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) followed with a jumper and then a layup by Chris Mason (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary's High School) had WNMU on a 7-0 run.

After a Roadrunner basket, Berry tallied another jumper and after Luttrell dialed long distance again the Mustangs were back within 30, 80-50, with five minutes to play.

Ryan Crane (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek High School) closed the game with a layup with just under a minute to play to leave the deficit at 28, which would end up being the final margin of victory.

Berry and Luttrell each tallied double-digits in points for the Mustangs, with Berry leading the team with 14 points, while he also tied for the team lead in rebounds in seven along with Luttrell, as he added 12 points.

Carter was third on the team with nine points.

MSC shot over 53 percent from the field (34-64), while WNMU shot in the 36 percent range (19-52).

WNMU will return home for their next two games beginning with Colorado Mesa on Friday night with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.
