Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team opened up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play in style routing Regis, 80-56, Friday night at the Regis Fieldhouse.
Regis (3-2, 0-1 RMAC) scored the first point of the game and that would be their only lead of the night.
WNMU (1-3, 1-0 RMAC) followed the Rangers' point by scoring the next six points and never looked back.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) opened the scoring for the Mustangs, posting a layup and a jumper on back-to-back possessions. A layup by
Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) expanded the WNMU lead to five, 6-1, at the 16:42 mark.
RU fought back to eventually tie the game at 28, but the Mustangs reeled off an 11-0 run to open up too large of a lead for the Rangers to come back.
Berry started the scoring run with a pair of free throws, which Carter and
Juan Suarez (Nogales, AZ/Nogales High School) followed up with layups to push the lead to six.
Berry added to that a steal and a dunk before Carter drained a three-pointer to give WNMU a 39-28 lead with two minutes to play before halftime.
The Rangers would trim one-point off the lead over the final two minutes leaving WNMU up ten, 43-33, at the break.
RU opened the second stanza with a 4-0 run to get the deficit within six before the Mustangs countered with an 8-0 run to again push the lead into double-digits.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School) posted the first points of the second half to trigger the run, as he came away with a steal and layup.
Daryl Littleton (Tucson, AZ/Palo Verde High School) added to that an offensive rebound and putback and then
Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) tallied the next four points, with a layup and a jumper to make it a 51-37 game at the 15:13 mark.
The lead would reach the 20's for good at the 12-minute mark on a trey by Riley for a 63-42 advantage.
Riley's three helped continue what would end up being another lengthy scoring run, this time another 11-0 run for a 27-point advantage.
In addition to Riley's three, Carter connected on a jumper and Luttrell dialed long distance before
Chris Mason (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary's High School) concluded the run hitting on one of two free throws.
WNMU would reach their highest lead of the night of 30 at the 3:16 mark following a pair of free throws by Luttrell.
Five Mustangs tallied in double-figures, led by Riley's 16, with 14 coming in the second half, as he also added five rebounds and two steals. Carter added 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds and a block. Luttrell chipped in 13, making an economical 4-of-5 from the field, including a three-pointer and a 4-for-4 effort from the charity stripe. Suarez also found his way into double-figures with 10 points, along with six assists. Berry also added 10 points and five rebounds.
WNMU shot nearly 48 percent (47.7) from the field, hitting on 31-of-65 shots, while holding Regis to a 35.7 shooting effort (20-56). Both teams also made 13 free throws, while it only took the Mustangs to reach that mark in 16 attempts (81.3), it took Regis 26 tries (50).
WNMU will remain in Denver to battle the No. 3 ranked team in the nation in Metro State Saturday night with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
