LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will open a three-game road swing Wednesday night when they face Division I New Mexico State University.
Last season, NMSU defeated the Mustangs, 95-62, on Nov. 15 in Las Cruces. The Aggies hold the all-time series lead at 61-23-1.
NMSU (5-4) is coming off of a loss against rival UTEP, 73-69, in El Paso this past Sunday. In fact, the Aggies have lost three straight, falling to Southern Mississippi (74-66) and Arizona (83-76).
NMSU defeated in-state rival New Mexico back on Nov. 16 in The Pit, 62-53. WNMU faced-off against UNM back on Nov. 5 in preseason action with the Lobos taking that matchup, 99-68.
The Aggies have three players that average in double-figures led by Wendell McKines' 16.6 per contest, while also leading the team in rebounds per game at 9.2. Christian Kabongo is a close second chipping in 15.3 a game, followed by Hernst Laroche's 10.9 a contest.
NMSU has connected on over 43 percent (212-488) of their field goals, while opponents are close to that mark hitting on 220-of-505.
WNMU (2-5) looks to build off of their last game out when they defeated Western State, 66-56, Saturday night inside Drag's Court.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) continues to lead the offense scoring at a 16.3 points per game clip and is coming off of his best game of the season when he scored 27 points. He also leads the team in rebounds, averaging 5.3 a contest.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School) is second on the team in scoring, posting 15.3 per game and leads the team in steals with 15.
Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) is also averaging in double-figures, as the Las Cruces native tallies 12.4 per game, along with being second on the team in rebounds at 4.6.
