GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University volleyball team begins a big road trip Friday night as they look to try and clinch a spot in the upcoming RMAC Tournament, along with improving their standing in the West Division.
The Mustangs (12-11, 8-6 RMAC) will begin with Colorado Mesa (9-15, 4-10 RMAC) tonight at 7 p.m.
WNMU swept CMU, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19) back on Oct. 1 inside Drag's Court.
Angelina Pulu (Long Beach, CA/Robert A. Millikan High School) led the way for the Mustangs with 10 kills, while also adding seven digs.
Since that match, the Mavericks have won four matches, defeating Westminster (3-1), Western State College twice, (3-0) and Chadron State (3-1). This will be the first match back in Grand Junction since Oct. 8 for CMU, having played the last five matches on the road.
The Mavericks are 5-6 at home, while WNMU is 3-6 in true road games this season.
Kelly Regimbal and Antoinette McCormick led the Mavericks in kills, with Regimbal posting 244 to 206 for McCormick.
Jordyn Moody holds the most assists with 716, while Megan Rush leads the team in digs with 420.
The team has 142 blocks, with Rachael Beaty leading the way with 52.
WNMU is led by Pulu in kills with 335, while
Ziona Verhulsdonk (Kailua, HI/Hawaii Preparatory Academy) has 197 and
Heather Rux (Cottonwood, AZ/Mingus Union High School) with 185.
Alyssa Meihack (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) has 854 assists to lead the team, while Pulu also leads the team in digs with 332.
WNMU enters the game tied for second in the West Division with Adams State.
CMU is tied with New Mexico Highlands for the fourth and final spot in the West Division, as both have conference marks of 4-10.
WNMU will face Fort Lewis Saturday night at 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (5-17, 2-12 RMAC) are on a six-game slid entering Friday night against New Mexico Highlands.
Fort Lewis' last win came against CSU-Pueblo (3-2) back on Oct. 7 in Durango.
WNMU defeated Fort Lewis, 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21), back on Sep. 30 at Drag's Court.
The Skyhawks are led in kills by Stephani Sonka with 182, while three others have over 100 including Jessica Wilson (165)m Ashley Wells (160) and Taylor Frederking (130).
Ciara Krening has the most assists with 541, while Wilson leads in digs with 164.
Fort Lewis still remains just two games out of the last tournament spot with four games remaining, all coming at home.
